CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – A trio of signings within the past 10 days have bolstered the New England Revolution’s roster ahead of the 2016 campaign, but General Manager Michael Burns says there’s more work to be done as the squad continues to take shape in the coming weeks and months.
The additions of Xavier Kouassi, Sambinha and Jordan McCrary have brought New England’s roster up to 22 players, leaving six roster spots open with five weeks remaining in preseason.
It’s unlikely all of those roster spots will be filled before the season opener against the Houston Dynamo on March 6 as New England assess all available options, but Burns does anticipate more additions both before the season gets underway, and as the opening weeks and months of the season unfold.
“It’s always a work in progress, but we’re getting there,” Burns said of the roster. “We’ve obviously announced some signings this week, but we still have a few roster spots open. We’re going to look to fill those in the next couple of months.
“In an ideal world, you’d have 28 roster spots filled before March 6. That’s going to be unlikely. We want to be as smart as possible when we sign guys, and what positions we sign.”
New England have addressed defensive depth issues with center back Sambinha and versatile fullback McCrary, and they’ve added bite in central midfield with the tough-tackling Kouassi.
Burns has been coy about which positions the Revs are targeting next, but the eight unsigned players currently in preseason camp run the gamut from forwards, to wingers, to defenders and goalkeepers.
“We’re still looking to add to the roster,” Burns said, noting that the search isn’t limited to the trialists currently in camp. “I’d rather not get into the specifics in terms of the positions, but we’re still looking to add some guys.”
