FINAL: Revolution 1, Sporting KC 1

DDC Huddle

TUCSON, Ariz. – The New England Revolution played Sporting Kansas City to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night at Kino North Stadium. Teal Bunbury was the lone goal-scorer for the Revs, who have now registered two draws through two games of the 2016 Desert Diamond Cup.

Lee Nguyen nearly opened the scoring for New England just six minutes after kickoff, as he tried picking the far corner from distance but caught the crossbar. Sporting Kansas City’s Graham Zusi answered with a chance of his own five minutes later, however, perfectly tucking a curling left-footed shot between Bobby Shuttleworth and the far post to put the Revs behind, 1-0. Charlie Davies, seeking his fifth preseason goal in four matches, had a chance to equalize but was denied by a fully-extended Tim Melia, who punched the shot just wide of the net in the 41st minute.

Teal Bunbury found the equalizer for the Revs in the 58th minute to knot the match at 1-1.  The former Sporting KC forward took one touch off a beautiful feed from Diego Fagundez, spotted space at the back post, and finished for his first goal of the preseason. Following Bunbury’s goal, both teams made mass substitutions, but both Jose Goncalves and Diego Fagundez stayed on for an extra 15 minutes, while Bobby Shuttleworth played a full 90 minute shift. Revolution Academy player Justin Rennicks also logged 12 minutes in tonight’s match, marking the 16-year-old’s first appearance in this year’s Desert Diamond Cup.

The Revolution resume Desert Diamond Cup play on Wednesday, February 24th, when the club faces the Houston Dynamo at 7:30 p.m. ET.
