FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – A familiar face will greet Kei Kamara in New England.
Teal Bunbury was a teammate of Kamara’s for four years at Sporting Kansas City (2010-13) before Bunbury was acquired by the Revolution ahead of the 2014 season. That experience makes Bunbury most qualified to speak about the qualities Kamara will bring to New England.
“Kei’s a great player. He’ll work,” Bunbury said on Thursday afternoon. “He’s great in the air. You can play him either up top or even out wide, so he’s pretty versatile. He’s going to add that aerial battle, that physicality for us, and add more depth to our team.”
To say Kamara adds depth is perhaps an understatement. Last year’s joint-leading scorer in Major League Soccer joins a loaded attacking corps that already features the likes of Bunbury, Juan Agudelo, Charlie Davies, Diego Fagundez, Femi, Lee Nguyen and Kelyn Rowe.
It’s a group that gives head coach Jay Heaps a plethora of options each week, but Kamara’s addition will also further enhance the competition for minutes during every training session and game.
“Everybody wants minutes,” Bunbury said. “Everybody here wants to start, everybody wants to play, whether you have new signings coming in or not.
“Competition always brings out the best in each player. I think it’s going to motivate us as a team, as well, to try to push each other since we have a lot of forwards and wingers.”
Bunbury said Kamara will be an immediate fit in the locker room, and having experienced a trade to New England himself, he knows how seamlessly the players will welcome their new teammate into the fold.
“This league is kind of crazy in that way, where you can end up on different teams but still continue to play with some of the same guys,” Bunbury said. “I think it’ll be good for Kei and his family to come out here. It’s a great organization and I know the guys will welcome him with open arms, just like they did when I came to the team.”
