The reigning MLS MVP made the most of his midweek trip to the MLS All-Star Game presented by Target, as New England Revolution captain Carles Gil drew the penalty kick that Seattle Sounders FC forward Raul Ruidiaz converted for the game-winning goal in the MLS All-Stars' 2-1 win over the LIGA MX All-Stars on Wednesday night at Allianz Field.
Gil, participating in his first MLS All-Star Game after making the squad last year but missing the match through injury, entered at halftime and became a central figure in the 70th minute. The midfield maestro slipped past a defender only to be chopped down inside the penalty area, and while there was initial concern as Gil received treatment on his left knee, he was back on the field in time to celebrate with his teammates.
At the time that goal extended the MLS lead to 2-0 following LAFC forward Carlos Vela's early header, and while LIGA MX threatened late with a goal from Pachuca's Kevin Alvarez, the hosts ultimately hung on for the 2-1 victory.
With the week's All-Star festivities wrapped up, Gil will now return to Foxborough and resume training with the Revolution ahead of Saturday night's meeting with D.C. United at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (TICKETS) with coverage on TV38, myRITV, 98.5 The Sports Hub, and 1260 AM Nossa Radio.
