FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution midfielder and 2022 MLS All-Star Carles Gil has been selected to participate in the 2022 MLS All-Star Skills Challenge presented by AT&T 5G. Gil is among 10 MLS players who will participate in the annual skills competition against participants from the Liga MX All-Star Team on Tuesday, August 9 at Allianz Field in Minneapolis, Minn. (8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2, TUDN). The MLS All-Star Skills Challenge will preview the MLS All-Star Game presented by Target, as MLS All-Stars match up against LIGA MX All-Stars on Wednesday, August 10 (8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, Univision).
A second-time MLS All-Star, Gil, the league’s leading assister and reigning Landon Donovan MLS MVP, is one of the most dynamic creators and productive passers in MLS. In 20 matches this season, the Best XI honoree leads the league with 67 key passes and is pacing MLS with 11 assists. His 29 assists since the start of the 2021 season are nine more than the next closest player, and his 177 key passes over the span are 41 more than the next player. Gil’s 50 assists across the regular season and playoffs are the most in MLS since his arrival in 2019, while his rate of 0.54 assists per 90 minutes played ranks third best in league annals. Gil is looking to become the second player to lead MLS in assists in back-to-back years, joining Sacha Kljestan (2016-17).
The MLS All-Star Skills Challenge presented by AT&T 5G will put the following five skills on full display: Shooting Challenge presented by AT&T 5G; Touch Challenge presented by Old Spice; Cross & Volley Challenge presented by AT&T 5G; Passing Challenge presented by Bounty; and Crossbar Challenge presented by GilletteLabs.
