FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Diego Fagundez had a pretty nice little Sunday.
The 21-year-old winger kicked off the 2016 season in style, scoring a sensational opener before setting up a pair of goals in the New England Revolution’s 3-3 draw with the Houston Dynamo.
It was a performance that deservingly earned Fagundez Santander Man of the Match honors – as voted by the fans – and a place on multiple MLS teams of the week in various national publications.
“He was great,” head coach Jay Heaps said of the sixth-year attacker. “He fought hard. He battled. To me he played one of our better games on the field.
“He really had a great stat line; one goal and two assists. But we want more from him and I think as he gets into the season, we’re going to see more.”
Heaps doesn’t mean that the Revs expect Fagundez to factor into three goals every game. Instead he simply means that Fagundez wasn’t necessarily at his best for the full 90 minutes on Sunday – and he still factored into three goals. That, perhaps, is even more impressive.
Although he was deadly in the attacking third, Heaps noted one or two instances in which Fagundez lost possession in tight areas; typically one of his strengths. With many players those moments wouldn’t have even registered, but it’s such a rare occurrence with Fagundez that it stuck out.
“He had a very good game, but he lost the ball a couple times in areas where he normally doesn’t,” Heaps noted. “If he’d put those together, he probably could’ve had two more assists.”
For now Fagundez will have to be satisfied with a one-goal, two-assist showing to kick off the season, a performance that will no doubt provide a boost heading into Saturday afternoon’s home opener against D.C. United at Gillette Stadium.
