FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Four new signings, three SuperDraft picks and an MLS veteran trialist have the New England Revolution’s preseason roster at 25 players, but head coach Brad Friedel said there’s more to come as the squad continues to take shape throughout the coming weeks and months.
Friedel said international additions Cristian Penilla, Gabriel Somi and Wilfried Zahibo are “big additions” to his first-ever roster, and the Revs hope to make “two-to-three more big additions” as preseason unfolds.
“We’re getting there,” Friedel said. “We’ve said it since the day that I was hired; we want to create competition at every position. We want at least two deep in every position, and we want players to fight during training for playing time. That’s how you get better.”
Friedel hopes to make any additions “sooner rather than later” – the preseason period is always a vital building block, but even more so with a new coaching staff in place – but the Revolution’s technical staff will also be diligent in making sure they’re bringing the right players into the mix.
“To get used to the style of play is very important,” Friedel said. “Sometimes, you have to bring in a player or two later on. It’s not ideal, but if we have to do that, then we will.”
