FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution forward Gustavo Bou has been voted Major League Soccer’s Player of the Month for July 2021. Bou scored five goals and added one assist across six games in July, helping New England register a 4-1-1 record and climb atop the Supporters’ Shield standings. This marks the second consecutive month a Revolution player has been awarded Player of the Month, after Carles Gil earned the honor for his play in June.
This marks the eighth time a New England player has taken home the honor, with Bou becoming the seventh different Revolution player to earn the award. Taylor Twellman is the only Revolution player to earn Player of the Month award on two occasions (May 2002 and September 2005). It also marks the first time the club has produced consecutive Players of the Month, and the second time it has had two players earn the honor in the same season (2005 – Clint Dempsey, Taylor Twellman).
Bou opened the month with a goal in the Revolution’s 2-2 draw at the Columbus Crew on July 3, before scoring the lone goal in the team’s 1-0 away win at Atlanta United FC on July 17. After distributing an assist in New England’s 5-0 win at Inter Miami CF on July 21, Bou submitted his first career regular-season brace in a 2-1 win against CF Montreal on July 25 – taking home AT&T Goal of the Week for his right-footed strike from distance in the 29th minute. He maintained his blistering run of form into the team’s 3-2 away win against the New York Red Bulls on July 31, earning another Goal of the Week nomination for his bar-down hit from distance in the 60th minute.
At the season’s midway point, Bou owns 10 goals – one shy of Seattle’s Raúl Ruidíaz in the MLS Golden Boot race. ‘La Pantera,’ one of four Revolution players selected to the 2021 MLS All-Star Game, is seeking the second 20-goal campaign in Revolution history, a mark only eclipsed by Taylor Twellman (23 goals) in 2002. Dating back to his MLS debut on July 17, 2019, Bou has scored 24 goals, which is second most league-wide across that span. His 0.50 goals per game and 0.58 goals per 90 minutes clips are both second best in Revs history.
Bou will look to maintain his electric goal-scoring pace when he leads the first-place Revolution into action against the third-place Philadelphia Union this Sunday, August 8 at 6:00 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium. The contest airs locally on WSBK-TV38, myRITV, 98.5 The Sports Hub and 1260 AM Nossa Radio.
