FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution midfielders Jermaine Jones and Lee Nguyen have each been called into the U.S. Men’s National Team for the annual January training camp, which will open at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. on Monday, January 12. Jones and Nguyen are two of 28 players that have been called into the camp by U.S. MNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. The camp is scheduled to run through early February, and build toward a pair of friendlies – playing first on the road against Chile on Wednesday, January 28 and then hosting Panama at StubHub Center on Sunday, February 8.
Jones and Nguyen each played vital roles in helping the Revolution win the Eastern Conference Championship and return to MLS Cup in 2014. Nguyen was named the club’s Most Valuable Player, scoring a career-best 18 goals to go along with five assists in 32 regular-season games before adding two goals and three assists in the MLS Cup Playoffs. A member of the MLS Best XI last season and a finalist for the league’s MVP award, Nguyen’s 20 goals in all competitions were the most by a Revolution player since 2007.
Joining Nguyen in the center of the Revs’ midfield over the final third of the season was Jones, who signed with the club on August 24. The runner-up for the MLS Newcomer of the Year award, despite playing just the final two months of the regular season, Jones had three goals and six assists in 15 regular season and postseason games with the Revolution, helping the club tally an 11-2-2 record in those contests, including a perfect 8-0-0 record when Jones tallied a goal or an assist.
Both Jones and Nguyen were a part of the U.S. squad that suffered a 2-1 defeat to Colombia on November 14 in London. Jones played 90 minutes in central defense, collecting his 48th cap, while Nguyen came off the bench to play the final 12 minutes of that game, collecting the fourth cap of his career and his first since 2007.
Following the conclusion of the national team training camp, Jones and Nguyen will join up with their Revolution teammates ahead of the start of the 2015 MLS season. The Revolution will begin preseason on January 22, with the club’s 20th season scheduled to kick off on Sunday, March 8 when they travel west to face Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field in a game that will be shown nationally at 9:30 p.m. on FOX Sports 1.
