AUDI 2023 MLS CUP PLAYOFFS FORMAT

The 2023 campaign brings a new, expanded playoff format to Major League Soccer as a total of 18 teams will compete in the postseason between October 25 and December 9.

The biggest change sees Round One become a best-of-3 series featuring a home-away-home configuration that guarantees at least one home game for all teams. There will be no extra time played in Round One, as games tied after regulation will go directly to a penalty shootout to determine a winner. The first team to win two matches in the best-of-3 series (regardless of whether those wins are in regulation or a penalty shootout) will advance to the Conference Semifinals.

New England will head to Subaru Park for Game 1 of their series with Philadelphia on Saturday, October 28 (5 p.m.ET), before hosting Game 2 at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday, November 8 (7 p.m. ET). If necessary, Game 3 would return to Subaru Park on Sunday, November 12 (3 p.m. ET).

Conference Semifinals (November 25-26), Conference Finals (December 2-3), and MLS Cup presented by Audi (December 9) will be single-elimination matches hosted by the higher seed, and those matches will feature two 15-minute extra time periods if tied at the end of regulation.

RECENT FORM VS. PHILADELPHIA UNION

Between regular season, MLS Cup Playoffs, and MLS is Back Tournament action, the New England Revolution and Philadelphia Union are perhaps two of the most familiar foes in the league in recent years, having met 13 times since July 2020 ahead of this Round One showdown. The Revs and Union split the season series this year with each team winning on their home ground. Dániel Gazdag's brace helped Philly to a 3-0 win at Subaru Park on May 20, while Gustavo Bou returned the favor with a double of his own in the Revolution's 2-1 win over the Union just this past weekend in Foxborough.

Bou's brace got the Revolution (15-9-10, 55 pts.) back on track at Gillette Stadium, where they finished the season with their best-ever home record (12-1-4) while averaging 2.18 goals per game (37 goals in 17 matches). Now they'll be hoping to rediscover their road form, having started the season 3-1-1 away from home before going winless (0-7-5) in their last 12 trips away from Foxborough since mid-May. That'll start with a solid defensive foundation, as the Revs have actually scored multiple goals in each of their last three road games (2-2 draw at Chicago, 3-2 loss at Orlando, 3-2 loss at Nashville).

Philadelphia (15-9-10, 55 pts.) finished the season with an identical record to the Revs, only claiming homefield advantage in this series by virtue of a better goal difference (16-12). The Revolution's 2-1 victory on Decision Day snapped the Union's eight-game unbeaten run, though they've also now won just once in their last eight games (1-1-6) heading into the playoffs. That all sets up a fascinating first encounter at Subaru Park, where the Union lost just once all season (10-1-6).

Game 2 of this Round One series will be at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday, November 8 (7 p.m. ET), while Game 3 (if necessary) would return to Subaru Park on Sunday, November 12 (3 p.m. ET).

Overall Record vs. Philadelphia: 11-21-8
Away Record vs. Philadelphia: 5-14-3

Last meeting at Gillette Stadium: Revs 2, Union 1 (October 21, 2023)
Last meeting at Subaru Park: Union 3, Revs 0 (May 20, 2023)

Saturday evening the Revs will wear their "Defiance" kit, which will serve as the team's community uniform for the 2023 and 2024 MLS seasons.

The "Defiance" kit features a white jersey and red shorts, with red socks and red trim along the shoulder and sleeves. The shirt's design is punctuated by a bold red "strikethrough" across the chest that embodies New England's famous spirit of positive defiance. Revolution is the ultimate act of defiance, and the club's new kit honors that resilient spirit that sparked the American Revolution, laid the foundation for our country, and has resonated throughout the New England region for centuries.
