FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution midfielder Stephen McCarthy underwent successful surgery on his left shoulder today, and will miss the remainder of the 2011 season while rehabilitating. He expected to make a complete recovery and return to full soccer participation in three to four months and be ready for the start of the 2012 preseason.

McCarthy, 23, underwent an arthroscopic labrum repair in his left shoulder, which was performed by Revolution head team physician Dr. Scott Martin at the Brigham and Women’s/Mass General Health Care Center in Foxborough, Mass.

McCarthy first suffered an injury to his shoulder on May 21, 2011, in a game at San Jose. Since then, he has re-injured the shoulder three times, most recently on Sept. 4 in a training session. He appeared in 21 games, making 18 starts, while scoring two goals and adding one assist as a central midfielder.
