Carles Gil became just the third player in MLS history to score in both the first minute and 90th minute or later in the same game, leading the New England Revolution to a dramatic 3-3 draw with Atlanta United FC on Wednesday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. For his efforts, Gil landed on the MLS Team of the Matchday for the second time this season.
Gil's first goal came after just 21 seconds as the Revolution captain intercepted a pass from Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan and finished calmly to give the visitors a shocking early lead. It was the second-fastest goal in Revolution history, bested only by Jose Cancela's goal after 19 seconds in 2005.
After the Revs saw their 2-0 lead turn into a 3-2 deficit, Gil popped up again in the third minute of stoppage time to stun the crowd of 42,915 in Atlanta and rescue a point for the visitors. Andrew Farrell's right-wing cross was headed away but fell kindly to Gil, who cut onto his less favored right foot and drilled a shot inside the near post.
With five goals on the season, Gil is now tied for the team lead with Bobby Wood, who scored the Revolution's other goal on Wednesday night.
The Revs are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they'll visit New York City FC at Yankee Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET and fans can watch the game FREE on Apple TV, or listen to the local radio call on 98.5 The Sports Hub and 1260 AM Nossa Radio USA.
