Bobby Wood scored the equalizer then set up the game winner as the New England Revolution completed a perfect three-game homestand this past weekend, surging past Toronto FC, 2-1, to climb into second place in both the Eastern Conference and Supporters' Shield standings. For his efforts, Wood earned a spot on the MLS Team of the Matchday presented by Audi, while teammate Djordje Petrović landed on the bench after making a career-high nine saves in the victory.
Wood began New England's comeback in the 33rd minute, latching onto a half-cleared cross at the top of the box before rifling home a drive at the near post. It was Wood's seventh goal of the season, tying him with captain Carles Gil for the team lead.
The veteran forward then turned provider on the game winner, running onto Gil's lofted pass before cutting back for Giacomo Vrioni, who eluded the Toronto FC backline and rolled his fourth goal of the season past TFC goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh.
Wood, who has bagged five goals and three assists in eight appearances at Gillette Stadium this season, has now registered both a goal and an assist on three occasions this season, most in MLS.
The best of Petrović's nine saves came in the late stages as the Revs were defending their 2-1 lead, as the 23-year-old goalkeeper, just back from international duty with Serbia, scrambled to get across his goal and push away a bouncing effort from Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty.
The Revs will return to the road on Saturday night as they'll visit FC Cincinnati in a battle of the top two teams in MLS. Kickoff from TQL Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET, with coverage in English and Spanish on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV. The local radio call can be heard in English on 98.5 The Sports Hub, and in Portuguese on 1260 AM Nossa Radio.
