Carles Gil and Tajon Buchanan didn't even step on the field until the second half of Saturday night's 2-1 win over New York City FC, but both New England Revolution stars still earned league-wide recognition.
Gil, making just his second appearance since returning from a month-long injury absence, landed on the MLS Team of the Week for the sixth time this season. The Revolution captain came on at halftime with the score level at 1-1, registering his MLS-best 16th assist on Buchanan's game-winning goal. Not only does Gil have almost twice as many assists as anyone else in MLS, he also now has eight game-winning assists, tying the league's single-season record.
Buchanan, after registering one goal and one assist in Canada's 3-0 win over El Salvador in a World Cup Qualifier on Wednesday night, returned to the Revs with a substitute appearance on Saturday. The 22-year-old had only been on the field four minutes when Gil teed him up for the game winner, a rocket from the edge of the penalty area in the 65th minute. Buchanan now has seven goals and four assists on the season, including four goals and one assist in his last four appearances.
Saturday night's win was the Revolution's 17th of the season, matching the club's single-season record previously set in both 2005 and 2014. They'll aim to establish a new mark this upcoming Saturday when they'll host the Columbus Crew at Gillette Stadium, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. on TV38, myRITV, 98.5 The Sports Hub, and WBIX 1260 AM Nossa Radio.
