FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution II has signed Academy midfielder Hikaru Fujiwara (pronounced: hee-KAH-roo foo-JEE-wah-rah) to a USL League One contract pending league and federation approval. The Lexington, Mass. resident becomes the fourth player to sign directly with Revs II from the Revolution Academy program, joining Meny Silva, Dennis Ramirez, and Colby Quiñones.
Fujiwara, 17, joined the New England Revolution Academy in 2016 at the age of 12 and has made over 100 appearances across all age levels for the program. In that time, Fujiwara has scored over 30 goals, including a hat trick in the 2020 Generation Adidas Cup qualifying rounds in Sandy, Utah. As a member of the Revolution Under-15 team in 2017-18, Fujiwara played in 28 games, starting 24, and scoring 11 goals. The midfielder followed that up with five goals as a member of the Under-17 side during the 2018-19 season.
In 2020, Fujiwara began training with Revolution II and made his professional debut with the club on Aug. 15, 2020 against North Texas SC. On his debut, he became the first Revolution Academy youth player to record an assist in a professional match. The following week, on Aug. 21, 2020, Fujiwara became the second Academy player to start a professional match for the club. During his first season with the club, Fujiwara made 10 appearances logging 250 minutes.
So far during the 2021 season, Fujiwara has made three appearances for Revolution II, including one start, and recorded an assist in the club’s season-opening victory over Fort Lauderdale on April 10.
“Hikaru Fujiwara has been a standout player over his five-plus years in the Revolution Academy and he is well-deserving of this opportunity to continue his development as a full-time member of Revolution II,” said Revolution Technical Director Curt Onalfo. “Since debuting with the team last season, Hikaru has consistently performed well and taken full advantage of his opportunities at the professional level. We are excited to help Hikaru continue his growth on and off the field as he continues his ascent in our club.”
Revolution II (1-2-1, 4pts.) continues its USL League One campaign on Friday, May 28 at Gillette Stadium against Fort Lauderdale CF with kickoff scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET on ESPN+. Revolution II’s second season features a 28-game slate running through October that will culminate in a six-team playoff in November.
