FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution have acquired forward Jozy Altidore via free agency and extended the player’s contract an additional year, through the 2024 season, after Toronto FC exercised the club’s one offseason buyout. Toronto will remain responsible for a portion of the player’s salary through 2023.
Altidore, a two-time U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year with more than 195 career goals and 550 games played for club and country, joins the Revolution for his 11th MLS season as he continues a decorated career that includes participation in two FIFA World Cups, MLS Cup MVP honors, a Dutch Cup title, and more than 200 appearances in European club competition.
“We welcome Jozy Altidore to the New England Revolution. Jozy is a player we know well and feel confident that he will be an excellent addition to our team,” Revolution Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena said. “I believe Jozy can continue to be an outstanding goal scorer, and we will work hard to get him back to full fitness and in good form over the next couple of months.”
Altidore joins New England after seven seasons with Toronto FC, where he was an MLS Cup MVP and two-time MLS All-Star. He was a leader on the Reds when they completed the 2017 treble by winning MLS Cup, the Supporters’ Shield, and the Canadian Championship. Altidore departed Toronto as the second-leading scorer in club history. For his MLS career with the New York Red Bulls (2006-08), where he played under Bruce Arena, and Toronto FC (2015-21), Altidore has tallied 77 goals with 25 assists, including nine additional playoff goals, with three goals across 10 appearances in Concacaf Champions League play.
Altidore’s 15-year career on the international stage has seen him accumulate 115 senior caps, ninth most in United States history. He was the second-youngest player to reach the century mark with the U.S. His 42 goals scored rank third most in program history and first among active players. The owner of five FIFA World Cup appearances between 2010 and 2014, the striker has also tallied 18 times in 41 World Cup Qualifying games while participating in four Concacaf Gold Cups. Altidore was named U.S. Soccer’s Young Male Player of the Year in 2006 and is a two-time Male Player of the Year honoree in 2013 and 2016.
“I am excited to begin this next chapter with the Revolution and look forward to competing for trophies in New England,” Altidore added. “I am grateful for this opportunity to reunite with Bruce Arena and look forward to getting to work with my teammates immediately.”
Altidore, 32, is one of the most accomplished Americans to feature on the European stage, where he spent time in Spain with Villarreal, England with Hull City and Sunderland, Turkey with Bursaspor, and the Netherlands with AZ Alkmaar. During the 2012-13 campaign, he set the record for goals scored by an American in a European league with 31 tallies for Alkmaar en route to the KNVB Cup title. Altidore totaled 70 Premier League appearances during his time in England, while scoring four times in 21 UEFA Europa League games.
The New England Revolution open the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League campaign on Friday, Feb. 18 against Cavaly AS in the Round of 16 at Gillette Stadium (5:30 p.m. ET – FOX Sports, TUDN). Leg 2 vs. Cavaly is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 22 (6:00 p.m. ET – FOX Sports, TUDN). Revolution Season Memberships, single-game tickets, and SCCL “Pay-as-We-Play” ticket packages are on sale now.
