FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (June 9, 2023) – New England Revolution goalkeeper Djordje Petrović (Serbia) and defender Christian Makoun (Venezuela) have been called into their respective national teams. Serbia will face Jordan in a friendly on Friday, June 16 (2:30 p.m. ET – Vienna, Austria) before taking on Bulgaria in a qualifying match for the 2024 UEFA European Championship on Tuesday, June 20 (2:45 p.m. ET – Razgrad, Bulgaria). Makoun will join Venezuela ahead of two friendly matches, beginning Thursday, June 15 against Honduras (8:00 p.m. ET – Washington, D.C.) followed by a meeting with Guatemala on Sunday, June 18 (5:00 p.m. ET – Hartford, Conn.).

This marks the third time Petrović, 23, has been called into the Serbia National Team, most recently starting and playing 45 minutes in a January friendly against the United States. Petrović made his debut for Serbia in 2021, keeping a clean sheet in a friendly against the Dominican Republic. So far this season, Petrović ranks second in MLS with 62 saves and tied for third with six clean sheets. Since making his MLS debut last June, Petrović leads the league with 147 saves and has collected 13 shutouts – second-most in MLS over that span. On April 29, Petrović became the fastest goalkeeper in MLS history to record five penalty saves, doing so in only 31 games.

Makoun, 23, has earned six senior caps for La Vinotinto, most recently starting at left back in a pair of November friendlies against Panama and Syria. Makoun registered his first international assist in Venezuela’s 2-1 victory over Syria. Makoun was called up for a pair of March friendlies, but did not make an appearance. The defender previously featured for Venezuela 23 times at the youth international level, including 14 appearances for the Under-20 side, serving as captain nine times. So far this season, Makoun has played in six league matches for New England with four starts, recording his first MLS assist on May 27 against Chicago Fire FC.

The New England Revolution (7-3-6, 27 pts.) return to Gillette Stadium on Saturday, June 10 to host Inter Miami CF (5-11-0, 15 pts.) on the club’s annual Pride Night.
