CURRENT FORM
New England Revolution
10th in Eastern Conference (0-0-1, 1 pt.)
Last Result | 0-0 draw at Nashville SC
The Revolution head into their first home game of 2025 coming off a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Nashville SC in last Saturday’s season opener. While New England’s defense impressed with a shutout performance at GEODIS Park, the team is still searching for its first goal of the season.
With just one match played, the Revolution sit in 10th place in the Eastern Conference standings, though early-season rankings are bound to shift. Now, the Revs look to secure points at home early on and aim to flip the script against Columbus, who earned six points off New England in their two matchups last season.
Columbus Crew
1st in Eastern Conference (1-0-0, 3 pts.)
Last Result | 4-2 win vs. Chicago Fire FC
For Revolution head coach Caleb Porter, Columbus is a familiar foe. Porter led the Crew from 2019-2022, guiding them to an MLS Cup victory in 2020. He faces his former club as they lead the Eastern Conference, following Columbus’ high-scoring victory at home last Saturday.
The Crew finished second in the Eastern Conference last season with a 19-6-9 record. Columbus begins the 2025 season without their star striker Cucho Hernández, after a record-breaking transfer to LaLiga’s Real Betis in the offseason. Columbus boasted the league's second-best attack last season (72 goals), trailing only high-flying Miami, largely thanks to Hernández and his 19 goals. While his departure from the club raised questions about their attack, the Crew's win against Chicago seems to have silenced any doubts about their attacking ability.
KEY PLAYERS
Revolution center back Brayan Ceballos
Ceballos was a key element of New England’s season-opening performance, as he helped the backline and goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič secure the first shutout of the season. Although the Colombia native has had limited time with his new club, he displayed no lack of unity with his teammates in his MLS debut.
The 23-year-old defender has proven to be a valuable addition to the Revolution roster, securing a spot on the MLS Team of the Matchday following his first match with New England. Ceballos will be an integral piece of New England’s effort to slow down the Crew’s attack come Saturday.
Crew winger Diego Rossi
The MLS veteran attacker came up big for Columbus in their season opener, scoring two of their four goals and easing concerns about the team’s attack in the post-Cucho era. Rossi closed the first half with a close-range header and opened the second half by capitalizing on a turnover to double his tally and solidify Columbus' first victory.
Rossi joined the Crew in 2023 after a two-year stint with Turkish Süper Lig side Fenerbahçe S.K. He started his MLS career with Los Angeles FC in 2018, where he gained his first three seasons of MLS experience.
HEAR FROM THE TEAM
Head coach Caleb Porter on the mood around the locker room and the anticipation for the home opener:
“The mood’s great. I said it after the game [at Nashville SC], but I love that our guys weren’t satisfied with a draw. We have high standards, and we want to take the field expecting to win and not hoping to win. I think they understand on the road that a draw, we’ll take it. But I love that they were not satisfied, and that says everything about the group that we have, the standards we have, and the expectations that we’re creating. Now, we’re coming back home for two games, I think it’s three out of four. In this league, you have to take care of business in your home games. We need to build a fortress here. We’re playing one of the best teams in the league [Columbus Crew], so it’s an opportunity for us to really make a statement of the caliber of team that we have and make a statement that this is a new season and a new team.”
Center back Brayan Ceballos on the team’s defensive mindset after last week’s clean sheet:
“It was a really important game for us as a measuring stick, with so many new players on the team. We needed that competition to measure our level and see where we were at. I think we’re at a good level to play against Columbus this weekend. The team is happy, very united. We give our best on the field and give everything we have. Defensively, we’re good, as well as in the attack. Hopefully we can continue to show that from now on in the coming games.”
Midfielder Jackson Yueill on the opportunity to make up for past results against Columbus:
“From my experience last year, and I think the Revs as well, we want some payback. We want to show the league that we are good players and a good organization, so that is something that really intrigued me here. Something Caleb kind of mentioned to me early on and throughout preseason is we want to prove that we can be a really, really strong team in this league. So, it was last weekend and at home every time we play, but especially against this team [Columbus], that we want to try to prove a point that we are here to compete this year. It is a very talented team and we respect the opponent, but we are coming out to win and give some of the stuff that happened last year to us back to the rest of the league and put our front foot forward.”
