Recap: Early ejection dooms Revs in 3-1 loss to Sporting Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The New England Revolution (10-14-5; 35 pts.) fell to Sporting Kansas City (11-6-11; 44 pts.), 3-1, at Children's Mercy Park on Saturday evening. Revolution forward Teal Bunbury put the visiting side on the board quickly, tallying in the fourth minute of the match. Minutes later, following video review, forward Krisztián Németh was issued a red card for a foul on Sporting Kansas City's Graham Zusi, forcing the Revs to finish the match with 10 men. Goals scored by Sporting Kansas City's Gerso Fernandes and Diego Rubio put the home side on the front foot heading into the half. Rubio completed his brace in the second half to give Kansas City their third and final goal of the match.


A few Revolution players achieved milestones in tonight's match. Forward Teal Bunbury made his 200th career MLS appearance, while forward Krisztián Németh made his first start as a Revolution player. In addition, defender Chris Tierney recorded his 457th career corner kick, surpassing Steve Ralston for most corner kicks taken in club history.


New England returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 23, when it will return to Gillette Stadium to play Toronto FC. The match kicks off at 5:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast locally on CSN New England, where Brad Feldman, Paul Mariner, and Naoko Funayama will be on the call. Tierney Sets Club Record for Most Career Corner Kicks

  • Defender Chris Tierney registered his 457th career corner kick in the ninth minute of tonight's match. Tierney surpassed midfielder Steve Ralston, whose 456 corners now rank second in the club's all-time ranks.
  • Tierney ranks highly in a number of club all-time categories including: games played (4th), games started (4th), minutes played (4th), and assists (T-3rd).


Németh Makes First Start as Revolution Player

  • Forward Krisztián Németh made his first start for the Revolution in tonight's match. Németh, who was acquired by the Revs on Aug. 10, made his debut on Sept. 2 vs. Orlando, and recorded an assist.


Revolution Make Six Changes to Starting XI

  • Revolution Head Coach Jay Heaps made six changes to the club’s starting lineup from its most recent MLS match on Sept. 13 at Atlanta United FC, as Teal Bunbury, Scott Caldwell, Kei Kamara, Brad Knighton, Krisztián Németh, and Chris Tierney replaced Juan Agudelo, Cody Cropper, Antonio Delamea, Diego Fagundez, Xavier Kouassi, and Je-Vaughn Watson.
  • Defender Antonio Delamea and midfielder Xavier Kouassi were unavailable for selection due to red card suspensions.
