ROCHESTER, Ny. – New England Revolution II (8-9-4; 29 pts.) fell to Rochester New York FC (8-8-5; 33 pts.), 2-0, on Saturday night at Monroe Community College. Revolution II’s newest addition, forward Weverton, registered his MLS NEXT Pro debut with a 26-minute appearance tonight. Academy goalkeeper highlighted the defense with a four-save performance.
“Obviously a tough one," head coach Clint Peay stated. "Giving up penalty kicks early in the game really made it difficult against a good team and I thought in terms of executing our game plan, we could have done a better job of exploiting the spaces in behind them, but overall, the effort and the competitiveness wasn't there today.”
New England fell into a 1-0 deficit in the early stages of the match, as Rochester netted a penalty-kick goal in the fifth minute. The hosts doubled their lead in the 43rd minute. Weinstein went on to make two saves in the first half as Trevor Zwetsloot and Marcos Dias each recorded two shots in the opening 45, but Revolution II would head into halftime down 2-0.
Revolution II went down a man in the 86th minute as Colby Quiñones was shown a red card. Ben Reveno and Sean O’Hearn both saw header opportunities while Dias had a right-footed shot from the outside of the box blocked in the 95th minute for the team’s final scoring opportunity as the 2-0 score would remain through the final whistle.
“Yeah, my answer for this never changes. We take it week by week, and we erase previous results, and we don't think about future fixtures," Zwetsloot said postgame. "We're going to meet next week, we're going to discuss a plan and we're going to look to execute to the best of our ability.”
With three games remaining in the 2022 MLS NEXT Pro regular season, Revolution II returns to Gillette Stadium on September 2 to host Orlando City B. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. ET on MLSNEXTPro.com.
