MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The New England Revolution defeated the New York Red Bulls, 3-2, after extra time in the Fourth Round of the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday evening. Teal Bunbury recorded a brace, including an equalizer in the 85th minute and the game-winning goal in extra time, and Juan Agudelo scored the quickest Open Cup goal in club history in the second minute. With the win, New England advances to the Round of 16 and extends its unbeaten run across all competitions to five games. The Revolution finished the match with 10 men, as midfielder Luis Caicedo was issued a second yellow card in second-half stoppage time.


Bunbury, who wore the captain's armband for the contest, scored the game-winning goal for a second straight match, having also scored the game winner on June 2 at LA Galaxy. The forward now owns six career U.S. Open Cup goals with New England, which ties him for second most in team history and brings him within one tally of tying Taylor Twellman's club record of seven.


Agudelo's goal marks his third in the team's last five games. It also clocks in as the quickest goal scored by a Revolution player across all competitions this season, and in New England's Open Cup history. The forward now owns three career goals in U.S. Open Cup play, which moves him into a tie with for fourth most in club history.


In net, goalkeeper Matt Turner made his U.S. Open Cup debut and submitted a four-save effort, including a penalty kick stop on New York's Alex Muyl in the 67th minute.


New England returns to MLS action on Wednesday, June 26, when the club hosts the Philadelphia Union at Gillette Stadium. That match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Boston, 98.5 The Sports Hub, and in Portuguese on 1260 AM Nossa Radio. A date, time, and opponent for the club's Round of 16 U.S. Open Cup match will be determined by a draw on Thursday, June 13.

Bunbury Scores Game-Winning Goal in Second Consecutive Match

  • Forward Teal Bunbury forced extra time with his 85th-minute goal and then scored the game winner in the 109th minute with a curled, right-footed shot from the edge of the 18-yard box.
  • Bunbury now has three goals in the Revolution's last two games. In New England's 2-1 win at LA Galaxy on June 2, he opened his 2019 account with the game-winning goal. This marks Bunbury's first goal scoring streak since 2018, when he scored in four consecutive matches over May and June.
  • With six career Open Cup goals for the Revolution, Bunbury moves into a tie with Kelyn Rowe for second most in club history. With another goal, he will tie Taylor Twellman's club record of seven goals in Open Cup play.
  • For his Open Cup career with New England, Bunbury owns six goals with one assist in eight appearances, including seven starts.


Agudelo Scores Third Career U.S. Open Cup Goal

  • Forward Juan Agudelo recorded his third career Open Cup goal when he tallied in the second minute of the match.
  • Agudelo's third U.S. Open Cup goal moves him into a tie with Andy Dorman, Pat Noonan, Steve Ralston, and Wolde Harris for fourth most in Revolution history.
  • In his Open Cup career with New England, Agudelo has registered three goals across eight appearances, including four starts.


Turner Saves Penalty in U.S. Open Cup Debut

  • Goalkeeper Matt Turner recorded his first career U.S. Open Cup appearance and registered four saves in the win.
  • Turner recorded the second penalty kick save of his professional career in the 67th minute, when he parried away an attempt from New York's Alex Muyl. He also recorded a penalty kick save on March 10, 2018, when he denied Colorado's Jack Price.
  • Across all competitions in 2019, Turner has registered a 2-1-1 record with 13 saves and a 1.60 goals against average.
