FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (May 9, 2023) – The New England Revolution were eliminated from the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in the Round of 32 with a 1-0 loss to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Tuesday night at Gillette Stadium. The Revolution resume the MLS regular season on Saturday, May 13 at Inter Miami CF (7:30 p.m. ET – Free on Apple TV, 98.5 The Sports Hub, 1260 AM Nossa Radio). 

Pittsburgh’s Danny Griffin tallied the lone goal of the match in the 44th minute as he latched onto the end of a long through ball and slotted a low shot home past Revolution goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. Forward Jozy Altidore led New England with five shots, while Giacomo Vrioni generated the best chance of the night for the Revolution in the 73rd minute, but his low shot was saved by Pittsburgh goalkeeper Jahmali Waite.   

Four New England Homegrown Players saw action on Tuesday as Jack Panayotou, Damian Rivera, and Justin Rennicks all earned starts. Fellow Revolution Academy alum Esmir Bajraktarević entered as a substitute in the 79th minute. Midfielder Latif Blessing started in the midfield and logged 64 minutes, with five duels won. 

New England, still in first place in the MLS standings, resumes the regular season campaign against Inter Miami CF at DRV PNK Stadium on Saturday, May 13. POSTGAME NOTES

  • Jozy Altidore logged his first start in the U.S. Open Cup in his first appearance in the tournament since 2006. The striker logged 90 minutes and finished with a team-high five shots.
  • Homegrown midfielder Jack Panayotou registered his second 90-minute outing in U.S. Open Cup play.
  • Latif Blessing made his first start since returning from Ghana (visa) for his 16th career appearance in the U.S. Open Cup. Blessing won five duels and four tackles. 
  • Earl Edwards Jr. notched two saves in his 10th career U.S. Open Cup start.
  • Christian Makoun started and played 90 minutes, finishing with team highs in touches (113), recoveries (11), clearances (6), and interceptions (3).
  • Carles Gil played 27 minutes off the bench and recorded a team-high three chances created.
