Revolution Academy Adds Two Head Coaches
The New England Revolution Academy bolstered its coaching staff during the USSDA winter break, adding two new head coaches. Marcelo Santos will serve as head coach of the Under-17s, while John Palmer will serve as head coach of the Under-13s.
Santos, 36, joins the Revolution after serving as an assistant coach at Marquette University for the past 10 years. In his time at Marquette, Santos saw the Golden Eagles claim two BIG EAST regular season titles (2011, 2013), a BIG EAST tournament championship (2013), and two NCAA tournament appearances (2012, 2013). Santos has played a part in the development of 12 professional players since 2009, including Colorado Rapids defender Axel Sjöberg and LAFC midfielder Callum Mallace.
A native of Recife, Brazil, Santos arrived in the United Sates in 2002, where he played collegiately with Union College (Ky.), Alliant International University (Calif.), and Holy Names University (Calif.). He possesses a USSF "A" coaching license
Palmer, 29, joins the Revolution after spending the past four years working with the U.S.U-17 Boys' National Team. While with the U-17s, Palmer served as the Team Performance Analyst Coach where he specialized in analyzing performance data, scouting opponents, and developing and delivering analysis reports for the U-17 BNT staff. Prior to his time with the United States Soccer Federation, Palmer spent six years as Assistant Head Coach for the Virginia Rush Soccer Club, where he assisted in program management of over 50 players at the U-18, U-16, and U-14 levels.
A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Palmer graduated from Old Dominion University in 2010 with a degree in Sports Management. He is currently completing his “A” coaching license with U.S. Soccer.
Homegrown Isaac Angking Enters First Professional Season
New England Revolution Academy alum and current Revolution Homegrown Player Isaac Angking began his first preseason as a New England Revolution player on Monday. After signing his contract on January 2, 2018, the 17-year-old midfielder became the youngest current member of the Revolution first team and the second youngest Homegrown Player to sign with New England after Diego Fagundez did so at age 15 in 2010.
The Providence, R.I. native finished his Academy career with 81 appearances, 67 starts, 28 goals, and 18 assists. During the 2017 fall season, Angking recorded 12 goals in 11 games with the U-19s.
National Letter of Intent Signing Date in Two Weeks
The initial signing date for high school seniors to commit to colleges is Feb. 7, 2018. Last year, the Revolution Academy had nine players commit to NCAA programs by the early signing deadline. For an update on players' college commitments, be sure to check revolutionsoccer.net on signing day.
GA Cup Resumes on Feb. 16; 2018 Spring Season Begins on March 10
The Revolution Academy U-17s and U-15s will be back in action over Presidents' Day weekend for the 2017-18 Generation adidas Cup Spring Regional Event, hosted by Atlanta United. While in Atlanta, both Revs teams will square off with Atlanta United, D.C. United, and Orlando City.
Teams will be back on the pitch for USSDA matches beginning on March 10, where the U-15s, U-14s, and U-13s will host New York Soccer Club at East Providence High School.
The following week, the U-19s and U-18s will start the spring portion of their schedule by hosting matches against Seacoast United at East Providence High School.
