FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution’s Under-16 team played their first group games in the year-long Generation adidas Cup this weekend, while the Under-14 team also saw action in league play. Combined, the Revolution’s youth teams went 1-1-1 in competitive games, while the U16s also drew against the New York Red Bulls in a friendly match.
In the Generation adidas Cup, the U16s picked up points against the Philadelphia Union on penalty kicks after playing to a 0-0 tie on Friday, October 10, at the Proving Grounds in Conshohocken, Pa., before falling to Toronto FC, 2-1, at the same venue on Monday, October 13. Sandwiched between those games, the U16s tied New York, 2-2, in a friendly on Saturday, October 11.
The U14s topped World Class FC, 3-1, on Sunday, October 12 at Milton High School in Milton, Mass.
UNDER-16s
The Under-16s played three games in four days, posting a 0-1-2 record, including a 0-1-1 record in the Generation adidas Cup. The U16s faced the the Philadelphia Union on Friday, playing to a 0-0 tie. The match went to penalty kicks at the end of regulation time, which saw the Revs earn points for the group standings, winning in PKs, 4-3. Travis Van Brewer (Wilbraham, Mass.) scored the winning kick, while Andrew Barrowman (Marshfield, Mass.), Max Diamond (Hopedale, Mass.) and Isaque Couto (Marlborough, Mass.) also netted from the spot. Goalkeeper Trey Miller (Monson, Mass.) made four saves to preserve the shutout.
The Revolution fell to Toronto FC, 2-1, in their next Generation adidas Cup game on Monday. The U16s took the lead in the 34th minute when Isaac Angking (Providence, R.I.) played the ball through for Izaiah Jennings (Barrington, R.I.), who finished past the ‘keeper. Toronto hit back with two unanswered goals early in the second half and held on to post the victory. Miller made five saves in the loss.
On Saturday, between Generation adidas group matches, the U16s played to a 2-2 draw against the New York Red Bulls. The Revs were down 2-0 at halftime with New York tallying in the eighth and 30th minute. The Revs got back into the game in the 52nd minute when Aaron James (Amherst, Mass.) was fouled in the area and Alex Shterenberg (Westwood, Mass.) converted the penalty kick. The comeback was complete in the 64th minute when Justin Rennicks (South Hamilton, Mass.) dribbled the ball to the end line and cut his cross back to Angking, who finished first-time. Goalkeeper Bill Sinibaldi (Plaistow, N.H.) made five saves.
UNDER-14s
The Under-14s continued their winning start to the season, posting their fourth win in as many games with a 3-1 victory over World Class FC. The Revs got off to the perfect start as Laz Dorogi (West Boylston, Mass.) played the ball in behind the defense for Jonathan Ferreira (Ashland, Mass.), who successfully chipped the goalkeeper in the first minute. World Class FC tied the game in the fifth minute through Jeremy Pantoni, but the Revs restored their lead in the 14th minute. Dorogi and Ferreira linked up again when Ferreira created a turnover on the left and crossed for Dorogi to score. The U14s extended their lead in the 67th minute when Kevin Vang (Cranston, R.I.) played the ball over to Samuel Deossa (Watertown, Mass.) for the goal. U14s goalkeeper Pat Quinn (Manchester, N.H.) made four saves.
All three of the Revolution’s youth teams are back in action next weekend. The Under-18s and Under-16s travel to face Empire Revolution on Sunday, October 19, at McAvoy Park in Rochester, N.Y. The Under-14s travel to take on New York Soccer Club on Sunday, October 19, at the School of the Holy Child in Rye, N.Y.
