FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution have hired Jarryd Phillips as Director of Sports Performance. Phillips joins the Revolution after nearly three years as Minnesota United FC’s Director of Performance and Sports Science, and also previously served as a performance coach with the Seattle Sounders.
In addition, Assistant Coach Mike Lapper, who served as the club's interim head coach for three games prior to Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena's arrival, has left the club.
“Adding Jarryd’s expertise in sports science and performance is a critical step toward growing the technical staff and evolving the soccer operations arm of the organization,” Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena said. “His detail-oriented focus and data-driven approach were great assets to his previous clubs in Minnesota and Seattle, and I look forward to seeing him implement his program here in New England.
“I would also like to extend my gratitude to Mike Lapper for his contributions to the club,” Arena added. “Mike's leadership, tact, and class during a transition period for the club were remarkable. We wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”
Phillips joins the Revolution with six years of MLS, NASL, USL, and NCAA experience as a sports science and performance coach. He most recently established and directed all facets of the performance department for Minnesota United FC’s first team and academy beginning in July 2016, implementing a data-driven approach prior to the team’s inaugural MLS season. In that capacity, he oversaw all nutritional aspects of the squad, administered strength, fitness, and rehabilitation programs, and participated in daily training sessions.
Prior to joining Minnesota, Phillips spent nearly two seasons as a performance coach with Seattle Sounders FC from January 2015 through July 2016. Before entering the professional coaching ranks, he worked as an assistant coach at the University of Mary in North Dakota from 2013-14. Phillips began his coaching career with the Premier Development League’s Thunder Bay Chill in 2012.
