FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution have three selections in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, which begins on Thursday afternoon from the Baltimore Convention Center. The Revs, who reached the MLS Cup Playoffs for the third consecutive season in 2015, hold their natural first, second and third round picks in the four-round, 81-pick draft. The first two rounds of the SuperDraft will be streamed live from Baltimore on MLSSoccer.com, beginning at 1 p.m., while the final two rounds will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 19 via conference call.
New England’s three picks in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft are:
• First Round
No. 10 –Natural First Round Selection
• Second Round|
No. 30 – Natural Second Round Selection
• Third Round
No. 51 – Natural Third Round Selection
New England’s natural fourth-round selection (No. 71 overall) was traded to Vancouver Whitecaps FC in February 2014 in exchange for midfielder Daigo Kobayashi. Kobayashi has played 62 games in all competitions with the Revs over the past two seasons, tallying seven assists. In November 2015, he signed a new contract with the club and will join the team for the start of preseason training later this month.
The Revolution made just one pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, selecting midfielder Marco Fenelus in the third round. Of the 19 players currently on the Revolution roster, six were selected by the club in past SuperDrafts, includingAndrew Farrell, Steve Neumann and Kelyn Rowe, who were all first-round picks between 2012-14.
The Revolution will open preseason training ahead of the 2016 MLS season in Foxborough on Friday, Jan. 22. The team will travel to Casa Grande, Arizona for 10 days of training on Tuesday, Jan. 26 and then train for a week in Foxborough from Feb. 8-13 before heading to Tucson, Arizona on Feb. 14 for the Desert Diamond Cup.
