FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution midfielder Diego Fagundez will depart tomorrow for international duty with the Uruguay Under-20 national team. Fagundez was one of 27 players called into the squad by head coach Fabian Coito. A final 23-man roster for the South American Youth Championship will be announced on Friday, December 26.
The 19-year-old will begin training with Uruguay U-20s on Sunday in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. This will be the final training camp held ahead of the start of the U-20 Championship, which will be played in Uruguay from January 14 through February 7. The top four teams in the tournament will qualify for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, while the competition will also serve as South American qualifying for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
This is the third time Fagundez has been called in by the Uruguay U-20s. He spent a week in camp with the team in October 2012 before appearing in two friendly games against Peru on August 4 and August 6 of this year.
A U.S. permanent resident, Fagundez was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, and moved to the United States as a child. He recently completed his fourth season as a professional with the Revolution, having signed as a Homegrown Player in November 2010. Fagundez has made 88 regular-season appearances for New England, scoring 22 goals and adding 14 assists.
