Revolution sign Chris Tierney to a new contract

Chris Tierney Re-signs

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution announced today that the club has signed defender Chris Tierney to a new, multi-year contract. A native of Wellesley, Massachusetts and the longest tenured player on the Revolution roster, Tierney has appeared in more than 200 games for the club in all competitions since being selected in the first round of the 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft. An MLS All-Star in 2015, Tierney has been a consistent presence in the Revolution lineup, starting at least 20 regular-season games in each of the last six years. Per club and league policy, further details of the contract were not disclosed.

“Chris has established himself as an integral part of this club and we are excited that he will continue to be so in the years ahead,” Revolution general manager Michael Burns said. “Over the last eight years we have had the opportunity to watch Chris grow and develop into the player that he is today. His understanding of this club and what it means to represent the Revolution is unparalleled, which made the decision to re-sign him an easy one.”

Recognized as one of the top left backs in MLS, Tierney ranks fifth all-time in Revolution history in games played, games started and minutes played, while his 32 assists are the fourth-most for the club. He is also one of two players, along with Taylor Twellman, to score for New England in MLS Cup, tallying the Revs’ late equalizer in the 2014 MLS Cup against the LA Galaxy.

In 2015, Tierney was named to the MLS All-Star Team for the first time in his eight-year MLS career, setting new career-highs in games played (31), games started (29), minutes played (2,613) and assists (6) while tying his career-high with two goals.

Tierney, who has spent time playing on the left side of midfield, in addition to left back, has nine goals and 32 assists in 186 all-time regular-season appearances with New England. He also has two goals and two assists in seven postseason games, playing every minute of the six MLS Cup Playoff games that the Revs played in the 2014 and 2015 Playoffs.
