HARRISON, N.J. – The New England Revolution conceded three goals in the opening 12 minutes and suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the host New York Red Bulls on Saturday night at Red Bull Arena. Bradley Wright-Phillips scored twice and had an assist while Lloyd Sam had a goal and an assist – all of which came in the opening 12 minutes – as the Red Bulls leap frogged the Revs into second place in the Eastern Conference.

Andy Dorman scored New England’s only goal, finishing a Lee Nguyen cross in the 37^th minute, but that was not enough as the Revs suffered their fifth consecutive defeat in the league and sixth straight in all competitions.

The two sides first met this season back on May 2 with the Revs opening the scoring inside the opening 10 minutes en route to a 2-1 victory. But this time, it was the Red Bulls who would take the lead shortly after the opening whistle as Sam got free on the right wing and clipped a cross to Wright-Phillips, who outjumped the Revolution defense to give his side a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.

Five minutes later it was Wright-Phillips, and Mike Grella, setting up Sam inside the penalty area and the New York winger fired a right-footed shot past the dive of Bobby Shuttleworth, making the score 2-0 in favor of the Red Bulls. That was the first time since a 3-2 loss to Chicago on Sept. 25, 2011 in which the Revs had conceded twice in the opening 10 minutes. However, things would only get worse three minutes later as Wright-Phillips added his second goal and New York’s third, getting behind the New England defense and finishing low, past Shuttleworth off a pass from Dax McCarty, making the score 3-0 in the 12 minute.

Grella would go close to making it four in the 27^th minute, only to be denied by Shuttleworth, before the Revolution pulled a goal back late in the half. Teal Bunbury played Lee Nguyen in on the right wing and the midfielder’s cross took a deflection off a New York defender before falling to Dorman in the center of the box. Dorman took one touch and prodded his shot past New York goalkeeper Luis Robles, making the score 3-1. That goal was originally flagged for offside by assistant referee Sean Hurd, but he was correctly overruled by referee Alan Kelly, allowing the goal to stand.

However, that would be as close as the Revs would get in a wild second half that saw Kelly shown six yellow cards, including a second to Revolution captain Jose Goncalves in the 88^th minute, causing Goncalves to be sent off.

Anthony Wallace scored his first goal of the season for New York in the 56^th minute, hitting a powerful left-footed shot from long range that deflected off Goncalves and past Shuttleworth to make the score 4-1.

Late on, after the Goncalves red card, Shuttleworth kept the Revolution deficit at three, saving a Sal Zizzo penalty kick in the 89^th minute and then sprawling to deny Zizzo on the rebound to keep the score at 4-1.

LEE NGUYEN– The Revs’ most dangerous attacking threat for most of the game, Nguyen had set up Andy Dorman’s goal in the 37^th minute and had a team-high four shots while also appearing to draw a penalty midway through the second half after being pulled down inside the area, but no call was made.

Additional Game Notes

• With the loss, the Revolution are now 6-9-6 and they remain on 24 points on the season.
• This is the first time that the Revs have been outside of the top two in the Eastern Conference since April 4. They are currently tied with Columbus Crew SC and Orlando City SC for third place in the East after all three sides lost this evening.
• New England has lost their last five games in the league and six in all competitions dating back to June 17. 
•  Since beating the Red Bulls 2-1 on May 2, the Revs are 1-7-4 in 12 league games.
• Revolution head coach Jay Heaps made three changes to the team that lost 3-0 on the road last weekend against FC Dallas. Andrew Farrell, Andy Dorman and Juan Agudelo each returned to the starting lineup in place of the injured Kevin Alston and Daigo Kobayashi and Diego Fagundez who each began the game on the bench.

• Nguyen now has 18 assists to go along with 27 goals in his Revolution career, leaving him two shy of becoming the sixth player in club history with 20 goals and 20 assists.
•  New York rounded out the scoring in the 56^th minute with the first goal of his MLS career, making the score 4-1. This was just the second time this season that the Revs have allowed four goals in a game.
• Dax McCarty was credited with the only assist on that goal, giving him two on the game. He joins Benny Feilhaber as the only two players to record multiple assists in a game against the Revs this season.
• Jose Goncalves was sent off after being shown his second yellow card in the 88^th minute. He is one of two MLS players to be sent off twice this season after also being shown a red card at Yankee Stadium on March 15 against NYC FC. Entering this season, Goncalves had never been sent off in an MLS game.
• The Revs have now been shown five red cards this season. That is the second most in MLS this season.
• Bobby Shuttleworth saved the resulting penalty in the 88^th minute, keeping the score at 4-1. He also saved the rebound for two of his four saves on the night.
• That was the first penalty saved by a Revolution goalkeeper this season and the first for Shuttleworth since Sept. 20, 2014 against Columbus. He now has three penalty saves in his MLS career.
• That was the sixth penalty conceded by New England this season.
