Revolution using well-timed bye week to “refresh” ahead of season’s home stretch

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – With the sour taste of last weekend’s demoralizing loss to the New York Red Bulls still lingering on the palate, it’s likely that the last thing the New England Revolution wants is a bye and an interminable two-week wait before returning to action.

But a break might be exactly what they need.

Saturday night’s trip to Red Bull Arena closed out a stretch in which the Revs played 10 games in 39 days, including four midweek matches in a six-week span.

Now comes a 13-day stretch without a game – a period the Revs need to utilize as they attempt to regroup from their recent struggles and fortify themselves ahead of the home stretch and a potential playoff push through the season’s final 12 matches.

“We’ve just got to look forward to it and work hard to come off this break,” said Charlie Davies. “I think it comes at a great time. I think guys are pretty tired at the moment and we’ll have a little week to refresh and come back strong.”

The Revs will need to come back strong if they hope to bring postseason soccer to Foxborough for a second straight season. A summer swoon (1-9-0 in the last 10 matches) has seen the Revs drop into sixth place in the Eastern Conference, one point back of the Columbus Crew for the final playoff berth.

While the front office works to bring in reinforcements ahead of the roster freeze date of September 15, players and coaches have their eyes trained on the Portland Timbers, who’ll visit Gillette Stadium on August 16 and begin a stretch in which the Revs will play five of six at home.

By then, Saturday’s loss to the Red Bulls will be a distant memory.

“You just get over it,” A.J. Soares said of the setback. “There are 34 league games. We lost one [on Saturday]. We have to win the next one.”
