FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Last weekend, all three of the New England Revolution’s youth teams were on the road, taking on the New York Red Bulls in Newark, N.J. The Under-14s played on Saturday, April 20, while the Under-18s and Under-16s played the following day on Sunday, April 21.
Overall, the teams went a combined 1-2-0 as the U18s topped New York, 4-2, and the U16s and U14s suffered 1-0 and 3-0 losses, respectively.
UNDER-18s
The Under-18s earned an exciting 4-2 victory against the New York Red Bulls on Sunday, snapping their MLS opponent’s 30-game unbeaten streak that dated back to May 5, 2012. The Red Bulls’ lineup included three Homegrown players signed to professional contracts with the first team: Santiago Castano, Amando Moreno and Marius Obekop. Gabe Gissie (Worcester, Mass.) submitted a dynamic individual performance, recording assists on all four of New England’s goals. Freddie Ferre (Waltham, Mass.) and Leandro Alves (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored in the first and 10th minutes of play, respectively, giving the Revs a two-goal lead for much of the game. New York’s Adam Najem then answered in the 73rd minute, before Alves scored his second goal for New England to make it 3-1. Alex Muyl netted another for the Red Bulls in the 83rd minute, but Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) added an insurance goal in the 89th minute, ensuring a Revolution victory. Now 11-3-2 (35 pts.), the U18s are ranked second in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s East Conference with 2.42 points per game.
UNDER-16s
The Under-16s suffered a 1-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls on Sunday, ending their seven-game unbeaten streak. After impressing coaches during their game on Saturday, U14 regulars Matt Ranieri (Natick, Mass.) and Justin Rennicks (South Hampton, Mass.) were selected to play up with U16s the following day. The game was decided by a lone New York goal in the 22nd minute. The Red Bulls earned a corner kick and delivered the ball into the box, where Kevin Politz was waiting to head it home. New England registered eight shots, but was unable to equalize before the final whistle. With their 9-3-4 (31 pts.) record, the U16s are currently fourth in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s East Conference with 1.94 points per game.
UNDER-14s
The Under-14s were shut out, 3-0, by the New York Red Bulls on Saturday, snapping their five-game unbeaten run and four-game shutout streak. After a scoreless first half, the Red Bulls tallied during their first trip up the field. 53rd- and 76th- minute goals followed for New York, and unable to find a consolation goal, the Revs suffered a shutout loss. With a 9-3-0 (27 pts.) record and 2.25 points per game, the Revs currently sit in fifth place in U.S. Club Soccer’s 20-team Northeast Pre-Academy League.
All three youth teams return home next weekend, when they take on Albertson SC at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, April 27. With the 2012-13 season winding down and the race for spots in the playoffs intensifying, both the U18s and the U16s are within one spot of their Albertson SC counterparts in the division rankings, giving the upcoming matches added significance.
