FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The three New England Revolution youth teams each played two games last weekend, with the club playing to an overall 4-1-1 record, including a pair of wins by the Under-18 team.
The Under-18s and Under-16s faced fellow MLS academy New York Red Bulls on Saturday, April 5, with the U18s claiming a 1-0 victory before the U16s fell, 2-0. The Under-14s played New Jersey Soccer Academy to a 2-2 draw on Saturday.
All three teams then faced Seacoast United on Sunday, April 6, earning a 3-0-0 record against their New Hampshire rivals. The U18s began the day with a 3-0 win, before the U16s and U14s followed suit with 4-1 and 2-1 wins, respectively.
UNDER-18s
The Under-18s began the weekend with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls. The Revs scored the lone goal in the 22nd minute when Christian Sady (North Andover, Mass.) won the ball in midfield before playing Amadu Kanuteh (Lynn, Mass.) into the clear to finish past the Red Bulls goalkeeper. That goal was enough to hand the Red Bulls academy their first loss of the 2013/14 season.
The U18s were back on the field the next day, as they earned a 3-0 victory against Seacoast United with Danny Apajee (Cranston, R.I.) scoring the hat trick. The Revs took the lead in the 20th minute when Declan McCabe (Weston, Mass.) was brought down in the area, and Apajee tucked away the penalty kick. The U18s doubled the lead in the 31st minute as Kanuteh played in Apajee, who scored his second goal of the game. Apajee completed his hat trick in the 59th minute after Sady and Gio Alves (Pawtucket, R.I.) combined to provide Apajee with a tap-in.
The wins push the U18s up the table in the East Conference of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy with a 8-5-2 (26 pts.) record, where they now sit in fourth place with 1.73 points per game.
UNDER-16s
The Under-16s experienced a mixed weekend as they fell, 2-0, to the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. The first half was an even affair, but the Red Bulls pulled away in the second half – taking the lead in the 52nd minute through Chris Flores, before Jerel Blades sealed the victory in the 66th minute.
The U16s were victorious the following day, however, as they overcame Seacoast United to claim a 4-1 win. The Revs took the lead in the 56th minute after a quick counter-attack ended with Eddie Venta-Yepes (Lowell, Mass.) serving the ball to Dylan Mott (Andover, Mass.), who chested the ball down and fired past the goalkeeper. The lead did not last long, as Seacoast equalized four minutes later through Cole McIntire. The U16s regained the lead in the 64th minute when Daniel Jones (West Hartford, Conn.) first-timed a through ball from John Wilkins (Natick, Mass.) for the go-ahead goal. The Revs extended their lead as Venta-Yepes scored after a turnover in the 70th minute, and Max Diamond (Hopedale, Mass.) rounded out the scoring in the 75th minute, deflecting Calvin Aroh’s (Glastonbury, Conn.) effort into the net.
The results leave the U16s with a 6-7-3 record (21 pts.), and they remain in seventh place in the East Conference of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy with 1.31 points per game.
UNDER-14s
The Under-14s kicked off their weekend with a 2-2 draw against New Jersey Soccer Academy. The Revs took the lead in the 32nd minute when Andrew Talcott (Westwood, Mass.) collected Amos Shapiro-Thompson’s (Worthington, Mass.) through ball and finished past the NJSA keeper. NJSA equalized three minutes later through Conor Kelly but the U14s regained the lead in the 71st minute as Shapiro-Thompson got himself on the score sheet, rifling the ball into the top corner after picking up a pass from Joe Brito (Bolton, Conn.), who had beat his man down the right. However, the Revs were unable to hold on as Kelly notched his second of the game with three minutes remaining to knot the score at 2-2.
On Sunday, the U14s completed the Revs’ sweep against Seacoast United, emerging with a 2-1 victory. The Revs went ahead in the 21st minute, as Alex Clarke (Windsor, Conn.) converted after being sent in by Isaac Angking (Providence, R.I.). New England doubled the lead just before halftime through Brito, who finished from a tight angle after Shapiro-Thompson beat two men and played his teammate in. Seacoast pulled one back in the 48th minute as Sebastian Lindner-Liaw scored, but the Revs saw the game out to claim the three points. The U14s are now 10-2-2 for the season.
All three youth teams are back in action this weekend, with the Under-18s and Under-16s facing Albertson SC on Sunday, April 13, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., while the Under-14s face Metropolitan Oval at Metropolitan Oval in Maspeth, N.Y., on Saturday, April 12.
