FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – All three of the New England Revolution’s youth teams were in action last weekend, going 2-0-1 on the day against Oakwood Soccer Club on Sunday, May 11, at Regis College in Weston, Mass. The Under-18s and Under-16s topped Oakwood, 3-1 and 2-1, respectively, before the Under-14s played out a 1-1 draw.
UNDER-18s
The Under-18s topped Oakwood in an eventful game – including a Revolution ejection – on the back of two converted penalty kicks. The Revs went behind early, as Logan Gdula put Oakwood ahead in the fourth minute. The U18s equalized just before halftime through Danny Apajee’s (Cranston, R.I.) penalty kick in the 43rd minute, but the forward was then ejected a minute later. The Revolution rallied in the second half and went ahead in the 67th minute. Amadu Kanuteh (Lynn, Mass.) found space in the penalty area and volleyed Declan McCabe’s (Weston, Mass.) corner kick delivery into the back of the net from 12 yards. The Revs sealed the win with three minutes remaining, as Guy Kabala (Manchester, N.H.) fired in the team’s second penalty kick of the game. The win extended the U18s unbeaten run to eight games (7-0-1) in the East Conference of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy where they now hold a 11-5-3 (36 pts.) record. The result also saw the U18s jump ahead of Oakwood into second place with 1.89 points per game.
UNDER-16s
The Under-16s left it late to beat Oakwood as they posted a 2-1 victory on Sunday. After a scoreless opening half, the Revs took the lead in the 46th minute. John Wilkins (Natick, Mass.) delivered a corner into the area and Chris Arling (Windham, N.H.) jumped highest to head the ball into the net. Oakwood responded quickly, with Roman Evans levelling the score in the 49th minute. The game was seemingly heading for a draw before Eddie Venta-Yepes (Lowell, Mass.) was taken down in the area, and Justin Freitas (North Attleborough, Mass.) stepped up to convert the penalty kick with three minutes remaining. The Revs limited Oakwood’s chances throughout the match, and goalkeeper Trey Miller (Monson, Mass.) was only required to make one save. The result was the U16s second consecutive victory, and they are now up to sixth in the East Conference of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy with a 8-9-3 record (27 pts.) and 1.35 points per game.
UNDER-14s
The Under-14s ended the day with a 1-1 tie against Oakwood – including another goal from team-leading goal-scorer, Christian Schifano (Sudbury, Mass.). The Revs took the lead in the 28th minute, when strong work from Isaac Angking (Providence, R.I.) caused a turnover before he cut the ball back for Schifano to fire past the Oakwood goalkeeper. The Revolution were pegged back early in the second half, with Benjamin Mines pulling Oakwood level in the 43rd minute. The U14s had nine shots but could not find a winner, while goalkeeper Eddie Walsh (Westwood, Mass.) posted three saves on the day. The tie pushed the U14s’ unbeaten streak to 15 games (12-0-3) since Oct. 6, 2013, and the team is now 13-2-3 for the season.
The Under-18s and Under-16s are next in action on Sunday, May 25, when they welcome Everton FC Westchester to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. The Under-14s face Players Development Academy on Saturday, May 17, at Gillette Stadium before also taking on Everton the following weekend.
