FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution’s Under-18 and Under-16 teams saw action last weekend, going 1-0-1 on the day against visiting Empire Revolution. The U18s played to an exciting 2-2 tie, before the U16s posted a 3-1 victory on Saturday, May 3, at Gillette Stadium.
UNDER-18s
The Under-18s began the day in heartbreaking fashion, conceding a goal in the final minute to tie 2-2 with Empire Revolution – having twice held an advantage. The Revs went ahead in the 10thminute, with Zach Herivaux (Brookline, Mass.) controlling a corner into the path of Guy Kabala(Manchester, N.H.) who fired into the lower left corner. The U18s held the lead into the second half before Michael Rowley equalized in the 68th minute. The Revs grabbed the go-ahead goal in the 88th minute when Amadu Kanuteh (Lynn, Mass.) shot across the goal and Gio Alves(Pawtucket, R.I.) was free at the back post to turn the ball home. The U18s could not hold on to the lead, and Empire scored the game-tying goal through Stephen Casey in the 94th minute with the final kick. The tie ended the U18s six-game winning streak, but extended their unbeaten run to seven games (6-0-1) in the East Conference of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy where they now hold a 10-5-3 (33 pts.) record. The U18s remain in third place with 1.83 points per game.
UNDER-16s
The Under-16s enjoyed a comeback of their own, coming back from a goal down to top Empire Revolution, 3-1, on Saturday. Empire took the lead in the 25th minute through Benjamin Noel, but the Revs came back strong in the second half. Derek Blanchette (Scituate, R.I.) equalized in the 50th minute, volleying in from inside the area off of Dylan Mott’s (Andover, Mass.) cutback. The U16s went ahead two minutes later, as Matt Ranieri’s (Natick, Mass.) delivery fell to Ben Waithe(Plymouth, Mass.), who fired past the Empire goalkeeper from the left side of the area. Blanchette got his second goal of the game in the 63rd minute to seal the victory, heading in another cross from Ranieri. The win ended the U16s two-game losing skid, and they now sit seventh in the East Conference of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy with a 7-9-3 record (24 pts.) and 1.26 points per game.
All three of the Revolution’s youth teams are back in action next weekend, as they welcome Oakwood Soccer Club to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. on Sunday, May 11.
