FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution today acquired midfielder Paolo DelPiccolo through the MLS Waiver Draft. He will be formally added to the team’s roster upon receipt of his International Transfer Certificate. Per league and club policies, further contract details were not released.
DelPiccolo, 22, was waived by the Montreal Impact at the conclusion of the 2013 season and was eligible for selection by other teams in today’s Waiver Draft. He was originally drafted in the second round (27th overall) of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft by Montreal, but signed with the Impact later on July 5, after a brief stint in Germany.
“Paolo provides us another option in the midfield,” General Manager Michael Burns said. “We believe he has the potential to be a productive player in MLS.”
While DelPiccolo did not see any action with the Montreal first team in 2013, the midfielder scored two goals in the MLS Reserve League and appeared in the Impact’s Under-21 international friendly against the Haitian national team on June 22, at Stade Saputo.
Before joining the Impact, DelPiccolo played seven games with Eintracht Frankfurt II – the Bundesliga side’s Under-23 team – recording one assist.
DelPiccolo played four seasons with the University of Louisville Cardinals, recording a school record 23 career assists, and scoring five goals.
The Colorado native has represented the U.S. at the youth level, earning three caps with the U.S. Under-20 squad as a defender during the 2008 Copa Chivas in Mexico, and participating in the 2009 Milk Cup in Northern Ireland as a member of the U.S. Under-18 team.
