FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution will miss out on the Audi 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs, but it won’t be because of their home form.
All 11 of the Revolution’s wins this season have come at Gillette Stadium – only Toronto FC and Columbus Crew SC (12) have won more games at home – and a 12th in Sunday’s home finale against New York City FC would establish a new club record for home wins in a single season.
Despite this year’s frustrations, it’s a mark the Revs are hoping to hit for their home fans.
“The results haven’t gone our way on the road, but our home support and our home fan base have been tremendous this year,” said Brad Knighton. “We’ve played some unbelievable stuff at times here at home. It’s been exciting for the fans, I think, to come out to the games knowing that they’re going to get an exciting game from us on the field.
“Hopefully that continues on Sunday and we can send the fans home happy one last time.”
Many supporters will likely travel to catch the Revs close the season next weekend in Montreal, with players and coaches already talking about the opportunity to pick up a morale-boosting road win.
But on Sunday it’s all about the home fans, who’ve consistently turned up to support the Revs throughout one of the more difficult seasons in recent memory.
“Even through the rough times that we’ve had this year and previous years, they’ve been great about coming out and supporting in every way they can,” said Kelyn Rowe. “Not just at home, but you see in the New York games, the Montreal games, the bus rides. We want to give them the best sendoff we can.”
