PORTLAND, Ore. – The New England Revolution conceded a pair of late goals to Fanendo Adi and suffered a 2-0 loss to the Portland Timbers tonight at Providence Park. The Timbers top goal scorer, Adi came off the bench in the 67th minute and scored twice in the final five minutes to send the Revs to their fourth loss of the season. New England, who is winless in its last six games, is now 5-4-6 on the season for 21 points and remains in second place in the Eastern Conference.

Both teams had chances in the opening 45 minutes with the Timbers coming out on the front foot and creating a series of chances, the best of which saw Bobby Shuttleworth parry a Darlington Nagbe shot wide for the first of his three saves on the evening. At the other end of the field, Kelyn Rowe forced Portland goalkeeper Adam Larsen Kwarasey into a pair of awkward saves while Chris Tierney went close with a free kick from just outside the area.

After the break, Shuttleworth was called upon to deny both Nagbe and Maximiliano Urruti, but the Timbers were finally able to break the deadlock in the 86th minute when Adi headed the home side in front with his fifth goal of the season. Jorge Villafana curled a free kick into the center of the penalty area for Adi, who powered his header past Shuttleworth, giving Portland a 1-0 lead.

With New England pushing for an equalizer late on, the Timbers caught the Revs on the counterattack and Alves Powell hit a low cross into the box for Adi to side-foot home and seal a 2-0 victory. The Revolution remain winless all-time against Portland on the road, going 0-2-1 in three games against them at Providence Park with New England failing to score in any of the three games.

Additional Game Notes

  • With the loss, the Revolution are now 5-4-6 for 21 points on the season. They remain in second place in the Eastern Conference, seven points behind D.C. United, who lost to Toronto FC earlier today. TFC is now two points behind New England, in third place.
  • The Revs are now winless in their last six games dating back to May 2 against the New York Red Bulls. They are 0-2-4 in that time for four of a possible 18 points. The six-game winless streak is the longest current winless streak in MLS and the second longest in the league this season.
  • This was the first time that the Revolution did not score first in a game since a 2-1 win over Philadelphia on April 19. New England had scored first in seven consecutive games, equaling a club record.
  • The Revs remain winless all-time on the road against Portland, going 0-2-1 in their three visits to Providence Park and failing to score a goal in any of them.
  • After tonight’s game, the Revs will only play one more road game this season against the Western Conference. That will come on Saturday, July 4 when the Revs face FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. New England is 1-3-0 on the road against the Western Conference this season compared to 2-0-1 at home against the West.
  • Revolution head coach Jay Heaps made four changes to the team that drew 2-2 with the LA Galaxy last weekend at Gillette Stadium. Chris Tierney and Lee Nguyen each returned from suspension while Andy Dorman and Kelyn Rowe returned to the starting lineup after coming off the bench last weekend. They replaced Kevin Alston and Diego Fagundez, who began the game on the bench, Juan Agudelo who is with the U.S. National Team and the injured Jermaine Jones.
  • In addition to Jones, the Revs were also without Darrius Barnes who has missed the last eight games while recovering from left knee surgery in late April.
  • With Jones out, Jose Goncalves once again wore the captain’s armband for the Revolution.
  • The Revolution failed to score in the opening half for the first time since a 2-1 win at Philadelphia on April 19.
  • Fanendo Adi scored twice in the final 10 minutes to give Portland a 2-0 victory. He is the third player to score multiple goals in a game against New England this season, joining Clint Dempsey (March 8) and Krisztian Nemeth (May 20).
  • The Revs are now 0-4-2 when conceding two or more goals compared to 5-0-4 when allowing one or less.
  • This was the fifth time that New England was shutout this season and the first time since a 0-0 draw with Columbus Crew SC on April11.
  • Bobby Shuttleworth finished the game with three saves, his most since stopping six shots on May 16 against Toronto FC. He was making the 90th regular-season appearance of his Revolution career in the game.
  • Portland outshot New England 19-4 with Kelyn Rowe taking a team-high two shots.
  • Teal Bunbury and London Woodberry were each booked in the first half of tonight’s game and are now two cautions away from being forced to serve one-game suspensions for yellow card accumulation.
  • Lee Nguyen is also two yellow cards away from a suspension for yellow card accumulation after being shown an 85th minute caution.
  • Diego Fagundez did not play in the game and remains one-game shy of becoming the youngest player in MLS history to appear in 100 games.
