FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution are “hopeful” that Kelyn Rowe will be available for Saturday afternoon’s home opener after an injury forced the midfielder off just 45 minutes into Sunday’s season opener against the Houston Dynamo.
Rowe started alongside Gershon Koffie in central midfield and completed the first half, but looked to be in some discomfort as the sides returned to the field following the halftime break. He stepped off just before the second half got underway and was immediately replaced by Scott Caldwell.
“Kelyn took a little bit of a knock,” head coach Jay Heaps said. “He was battling in the middle. I credit guys like Ricardo Clark, and I thought Alex had a good game in there, as well. Those guys were playing with some muscle and Kelyn got bumped and banged. I think to be smart, we took him out.”
The players were given Monday off to recover and when the team returned to training on Tuesday morning, Rowe remained inside to receive treatment. He did, however, return to the training field on Wednesday, doing a bit of work off to the side before heading inside for more treatment.
“He’s doing his rehab today and we’ll assess more (later in the week),” Heaps said on Tuesday. “He’s definitely feeling a lot better today than he was on Sunday.”
As to whether Rowe will be available for Saturday afternoon’s home opener against D.C. United, Heaps said that kind of decision won’t be made until the end of the week.
“We’ll see,” Heaps said. “He’s been getting some treatment and we’re hopeful.”
