Revs keeping focus firmly on Chicago: “We can only control what we can control”

Andrew Farrell vs. Chicago Fire | May 14

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – One by one, New England Revolution head coach Jay Heaps, defender Andrew Farrell and midfielder Kelyn Rowe spoke with the media on Wednesday afternoon. And one by one, they repeated a common refrain ahead of Sunday afternoon’s meeting with the Chicago Fire.

We can only control what we can control.
We need to take care of our own business.

The Revs find themselves three points back of the Eastern Conference’s final playoff spot heading into Week 33 of the regular season, and as a result, their playoff fate isn’t entirely in their hands; they’ll need some help to clinch a fourth consecutive postseason berth.

But any help the Revs receive in other matches won’t matter if they don’t get the job done themselves, and that starts with picking up three points this weekend at Toyota Park.

“Right now it’s about going into Chicago and winning a game, because if we don’t win our games, there’s no point in anyone else losing,” said Rowe. “For us, it’s about winning these next two games.”

“We can only control what we can control,” said Heaps. “That’s stepping on the field and giving our best performance against Chicago; preparing ourselves in the film room and preparing ourselves with the right focus on Chicago.

“I think if we take care of our business and go about it the right way, we’ll have a good chance against Chicago and we’ll let everything else play out how it should.”

There will be no opportunity for distractions on Sunday, as all 10 Eastern Conference teams will kick off simultaneously at 3 p.m. ET. New England will be interested in the results for the Philadelphia Union, D.C. United and Montreal Impact, but they won’t know those results until after their own game finishes.

So the Revolution’s entire focus will be in Bridgeview, where they’ll look to continue the fine run of form that has seen them win four of their last five games.

“If we take care of what we can take care of at this point in the season, then we can leave it up to whatever else happens,” said Farrell. “We’re really confident. We’ve been training really well. Before the break and even coming back now, a lot of guys are sharp. We’ve got a lot of guys who are back, who are healthy, so the squad’s ready to get going.”
