FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Should the New England Revolution defeat the Harrisburg City Islanders when they begin play in the third round of the 2012 U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, May 29, the Revs will then play their fourth-round match on the road.
U.S. Soccer today announced that the Revolution, should they win next Tuesday and advance to the fourth round, will travel to face the winner of the third-round match between the New York Red Bulls and Charleston Battery. Those two teams will meet Tuesday, May 29, in Charleston, S.C.
If New York defeats Charleston, the fourth-round match would be played at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., on Tuesday, June 5. Kickoff would be set for 7 p.m. Should the Battery top the Red Bulls, the Revolution will travel to Charleston, for a 7 p.m. match at Blackbaud Stadium.
Created in 1914, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest soccer competition in the United States. The single-elimination tournament, which is similar to the prestigious English FA Cup, is open to all amateur and professional teams affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation (U.S. Soccer). The Revolution is the 2007 U.S. Open Cup champion, a title that was the club’s first-ever cup tournament title. New England defeated FC Dallas, 3-2, in Frisco, Texas, to win that match. The Revs have a 11-10-3 all-time record in U.S. Open Cup matches.
