FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution kicked off the 2018 season with a frustrating loss to the Philadelphia Union last weekend, but it was just the first of 34 games on the schedule.
While the Revs are keeping in mind the past, they’re also focusing on what lies ahead as they open at Gillette Stadium in front of their home supporters on Saturday against the Colorado Rapids.
“We’re really excited about it,” said Matt Turner, who made his MLS debut in goal against Philly. “The Rebellion, the Midnight Riders, I know they’re excited about it, too, so we want to go out there, make them proud, and improve on our performance from last week.”
While the Revs struggled to pick up points on the road last season, their strengths truly showed when they played at home, and that’s created a confidence ahead of Saturday’s match.
New England won 12 games in Foxborough last year, setting a new club record for most wins at home in a single season. Additionally, the Revs’ 12 home victories were second-most in the league, only one win behind the defending MLS champions, Toronto FC.
“It’s always good to be back home,” said veteran Andrew Farrell, now in his sixth season with the Revs. “We have great fans, we have a great atmosphere and I think that’s always tough for away teams when they come to this place. That’s why last year we did so well, and we’re going to continue to try to keep that trend going this year.”
It’s the reason players have called their stomping grounds “Fortress Foxborough.” Knowing that the Revs’ supporters will be cheering them on often impacts their play on the field in a positive way.
“We really need to take advantage and start strong, continue our ways from last year at home, and just get back to winning ways,” said Scott Caldwell.
This will also be head coach Brad Friedel’s first game at Gillette Stadium, and he’s eager to show the fans what the team can do.
“It’ll be very nice to get in front of them, and hopefully we can send them home with three points,” said Friedel.
Kickoff for the Revs’ home opener is set for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday against the Colorado Rapids.
