Three straight wins not only sent the New England Revolution into the international break on top of the Eastern Conference standings, but also on top of the ESPN Power Rankings. Last weekend’s 1-0 triumph over FC Cincinnati saw the Revs leapfrog Seattle Sounders FC into the No. 1 spot in the rankings, where they’ll remain until league play resumes in late June.
“The Revs didn’t exactly have their finishing boots on against Cincinnati, but Adam Buksa’s goal proved to be enough in a 1-0 win,” said Jeff Carlisle. “It’s the kind of result good teams should get and New England did, and it was enough to push the Revs to the top of our rankings.”
MLSSoccer.com summed up the Revolution’s win over Cincinnati in a similar vein, giving New England a No. 2 ranking behind only league-leading Seattle.
“This week the New England Revolution basically did one of those videos where someone throws a basketball from the top of a stadium until it goes through the hoop,” said J. Sam Jones. “They took 25 shots before finally scoring on their 26th and final shot against FC Cincinnati.”
New England also ranked No. 2 behind Seattle in power rankings from Bleacher Report, Soccer America, and 90min, who said the Revs are “becoming a difficult opponent, both offensively and defensively, creating panic in the East.”
