FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution announced today that the team has signed French left back Didier Domi. Domi will occupy one of the team’s eight international roster spots and will join the team pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate. Per MLS and club policy, terms of the deal were not released.
Domi comes to Major League Soccer after spending the last 14 seasons in Europe, playing in France, England, Spain, and most recently, Greece. He also has experience playing in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup (now Europa Cup).
“Didier brings extensive experience playing at the top levels throughout Europe and he will add leadership and composure to our backline,” Revolution Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns said. “We’re looking forward to getting Didier in to camp and integrating him into our team.”
Domi, 32, began his playing career with Paris St. Germain’s youth teams in 1994, and signed with the senior club in 1996, making 48 league appearances in two seasons. During his two seasons with PSG, Domi played in the team’s UEFA Champions League matches, and also helped the club capture both the French Cup and French League Cup in 1998.
He transferred to Newcastle United in England in January 1999, making 55 appearances and scoring three goals during his two and a half year stay, before transferring back to PSG in January 2001. Domi played two and a half more seasons in Paris, before going on a one-year loan to Leeds United in the English Premier League for the 2003-04 campaign.
After his stint at Leeds, Domi moved to Espanyol in Spain’s La Liga, where he played two seasons. He made 42 appearances with the club, and helped Espanyol win the Copa del Rey in 2006. After two seasons, Domi moved to Olympiacos in the Super League Greece in 2006, where he played four seasons and made 60 appearances for the Greek power. During his time in Piraeus, Olympiacos won three Super League titles, two Greek Cups, the Greek Super Cup and advanced to the knock-out stages of the 2007-08 UEFA Champions League and the 2008-09 UEFA Cup.
