For the second straight week a New England Revolution defender has landed on the MLS Team of the Matchday presented by Audi, and for the second straight week it was largely due to their contributions at the attacking end of the field.
Brandon Bye registered a game-winning assist on Dylan Borrero's opening goal, then rounded out the scoring with New England's third in their 3-0 win over Houston Dynamo FC in the 2023 home opener this past Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.
Bye was key to the sequence that set up Borrero's winner, playing a clever one-two with Carles Gil down the right side before whipping a low cross into the box. Bobby Wood's near-post run opened space for Borrero to finish from the top of the box. It was Bye's first assist of 2023 after racking up a career best seven last season, tying the Revolution record for a defender.
Bye then capped the night with his eighth career goal, taking a layoff from Latif Blessing and finishing at the near post with the aid of a deflection from a Dynamo defender.
Borrero, who provided the secondary assist on Bye's goal, was also honored with a place on the Team of the Matchday bench.
The unbeaten Revs will set their sights on a third straight win to begin the campaign on Sunday night when they'll visit the defending Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup champions, Los Angeles FC, at BMO Stadium. Kickoff is set for 10:30 p.m. ET with coverage on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, and 98.5 The Sports Hub.
