Top 5 Playoff Games – No. 4 | Reis stands on his head to lift Revs over D.C. at RFK

DL - Top Five Playoff Moments #4

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Prior to D.C. United’s move to Audi Field in 2018, the New England Revolution created plenty of memories at the old RFK Stadium, both good and bad. But perhaps their best memory at the venue came in 2006, when they downed their rival, 1-0, in the Eastern Conference Championship.

Most remember that match for Taylor Twellman’s masterful fourth-minute goal, adjusting his body to drive home Pat Noonan’s right-wing cross. It was Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis who was busiest, however, making eight saves to shut out D.C. and win the Revs their second of three straight Eastern Conference titles.

Twellman’s early goal proved to be the Revolution’s only shot on target of the match, but it was enough for the Revs to push past D.C., who’d finished the regular season as Supporters’ Shield winners.

As a bonus, current Revolution sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena was part of ESPN’s commentary team for the game, and after Twellman’s goal, quipped, “What a great goal. Eric (Wynalda), you should’ve told me that Twellman was someone we should’ve considered for the World Cup.”

Arena had famously left Twellman off the United States roster for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
