FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – If the New England Revolution wins its quarterfinal match in the 2014 U.S. Open Cup tomorrow – when the team travels to face the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park at 7 p.m. – the team will advance to the semifinals where two potential game scenarios exist:
- If the Revolution defeats Philadelphia and FC Dallas (MLS) defeats the Carolina RailHawks (NASL) in their quarterfinal match, the Revolution would travel to play FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, on Wednesday, August 13, at 9 p.m. ET
- If the Revolution defeats Philadelphia and the RailHawks beat FC Dallas, the Revolution would travel to play Carolina at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., on Wednesday, August 13, at 7:30 p.m. ET
The locations of the semifinal match-ups were determined by a random selection process conducted by U.S. Soccer officials.
The Revolution was the 2007 U.S. Open Cup champion, a title that was the club’s first-ever cup tournament title. New England defeated FC Dallas, 3-2, in Frisco, Texas, on Oct. 3, 2007, to win the match and the 2007 championship. The Revs have a 15-11-4 all-time record in U.S. Open Cup matches.
Dating back to 1914, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the U.S., the Open Cup is a 101-year-old, single-elimination tournament. The winner claims the Dewar Challenge Trophy, one of the oldest nationally-contested trophies in American team sports.
