FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution’s Under-18 team last week wrapped up their 2013-14 season at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs, which were held Monday, June 23 through Friday, June 27, at Grand Parks Sports Complex in Westfield, Indiana. The U18s went 2-1-0, but didn’t advance to the quarterfinal round because of goal differential.
The Under-16 team participated in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Showcase, held simultaneously at Grand Parks Sports Complex last week, going 0-1-2 in the event to close their 2013-14 season.
UNDER-18s
The Under-18s played three matches in a span of four days against the Houston Dynamo (Texas), Chivas USA (California) and Capital Area Railhawks Academy (North Carolina). The U18s began the playoffs with a 4-1 loss to the Houstan Dynamo, on Monday, June 23, but bounced back with a 2-1 win over Chivas USA, on Tuesday, June 25, and a 5-4 win over the Capital Area Railhawks Academy on Thursday, June 26. Despite their 2-1-0 record in the group stage of the playoffs, the U18s did not qualify for the quarterfinal match because of goal differential.
The Revs got off to a slow start in their opening match against Houston, allowing a goal to Dynamo’s Zachary Jackson in the ninth minute. Houston controlled the play until Giovanni Alves (Pawtucket, R.I.) tied the score for the Revs in the 24th minute after receiving the ball from Danny Apajee (Cranston, R.I.) at the top of the box. However, the Dynamo added goals two goals before halftime in the 29th and 40th minute to post a 3-1 lead at the break. The Revs had their chances in the second half but failed to capitalize on their opportunities. A fourth goal by Elochukwu Ozumba in the 62nd minute was enough to seal the Dynamo win.Bruce Johnson (Brewster, Mass.) started in goal for the Revs and made five saves.
The Under-18s battled to a 4-3 victory against Chivas USA in their second match on Tuesday. The Revs got a boost from a pair of early goals by Declan McCabe(Weston, Mass.). The first goal came in the 10th minute when Apajee played a ball to McCabe behind the defense. McCabe then flicked the ball over a defender’s head and hammered home a volley to give the Revs an early 1-0 lead. In the 19th minute McCabe added his second tally. After receiving the ball outside from Amadu Kunateh (Lynn, Mass.), McCabe cut towards the goal from the right side and beat the Chivas goalkeeper with an outside-of-the-foot chip. Chivas USA tied the game with goals in the 21st and 30th minute but they were quickly silenced by a Kunateh goal off of a McCabe corner kick in the 45thminute, which gave the Revs a 3-2 lead at halftime. Apajee scored in the 75thminute after Kunateh fed him at the top of the box. The Revs surrendered a goal in the 78th minute but hung on to the lead for the final 10 minutes. Johnson got the nod in goal again, and made five saves in the 4-3 victory.
The Under-18s wrapped up the tournament with a 5-4 win against the Capital Area Railhawks Academy in their final game of the playoffs on Thursday, June 26. With the Railhawks eliminated after dropping their first two matches, the Revs needed to win by a large margin to have a chance at finishing first in the group and earning a berth in the quarterfinals. The Revs made steps in that direction in the first half and took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break on goals from Alves and Apajee. After allowing a Railhawk goal in the 60th minute, the Revs offense was sparked by Kunateh, who added two assists on goals from McCabe and Apajee, before scoring a goal of his own in the 75th minute to push the game to 5-2. Johnson made five saves while backstopping the Revs to a 5-4 win.
U18 Season Summary
The Under-18 team closed out the season with a 16-6-3 overall record following the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs … the U18s finished second in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s East Conference with a 14-5-3 record (45 points) and a 2.05 points per game average … the U18s ended the regular season especially strong, going unbeaten in its final 11 regular-season games (10-0-1).
UNDER-16s
The Under-16s played three matches in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Showcase, posting a 0-1-2 record against Chicago Fire (Illinois), De Anza Force (California) and Solar Chelsea (Texas). The U16s kicked off the showcase with a 1-1 draw against the Chicago Fire on Monday, June 23, followed by a 3-0 shutout loss to the De Anza Force on Wednesday, July 25, and a 1-1 draw against Solar Chelsea.
The Under-16s opened the showcase with a 1-1 draw against the Chicago Fire. The U16s conceded an early goal to Chicago’s Jack Shaw in the 16th minute before Ben Waithe (Plymouth, Mass.) responded with a goal in the 20th minute off a pass from Eddie Venta-Yeppes (Lowell-Mass.). Trey Miller (Monson, Mass) started in goal, making three saves in the draw.
The Under-16s were then shut out, 3-0, in the second match of the showcase against the De Anza Force. A skilled De Anza team kept the Revs off the score sheet and Eddie Walsh (Westwood, Mass) got the start in goal, making three saves in the match.
The Under-16s played to a 1-1 draw in their final match of the showcase against Solar Chelsea on Thursday, June 26. Both sides got off to a slow start, playing to a 0-0 stalemate at the half. Venta-Yepes got the scoring going with a goal in the 65th minute, but Solar Chelsea responded with the equalizer in the 76thminute. Although the pace of play picked up in the second half, the score remained knotted at 1-1 through the final whistle. Miller was the starting goalkeeper for the Revs, making three saves in the draw.
U16 Season Summary
The Under-16s finished the season with a 9-11-6 overall record following the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Showcase … the U16s finished sixth in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s Eastern Conference with a 9-9-5 record (32 points) and a 1.39 points per game average … the U16s ended the regular season going unbeaten in its final five games (3-0-2).
