Revolution U16s in their first 2011 playoff match

FRISCO, Texas – Both the New England Revolution Under-16 and Under-18 teams were in action on Saturday, June 25, with the U16s meeting the North Carolina Fusion in their first game of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs, and the U18s playing Shattuck-Saint Mary’s as part of the Showcase.

Under-16s

The U16s met the North Carolina Fusion in their first match of the Development Academy Playoffs on Saturday. The game remained scoreless until just before halftime, when North Carolina made 1-0 in the 39th minute.

New England then equalized on the other side of the break, when Willis Griffith (Amherst, N.H.) played the ball to Diego Fagundez (Leominster, Mass.), who found the back of the net in the 42nd minute.

In the 60th minute, goalkeeper David Hepp (Natick, Mass.) made a dramatic save, diving to his left to catch a side volley. Launching a counter-attack from there, Hepp picked out Fagundez, who then scored his second goal of the day.

The Fusion looked to level the score throughout the remainder of the match, but the 28th-seeded Revs upset the number seven seed to come away with the full three points.

Under-18s

The U18s played Shattuck-Saint Mary’s in their second game of the Development Academy Showcase, dropping a 3-2 decision in a contest with many scoring opportunities for each side. The Revs started strong, maintaining the majority of possession in the middle and attacking thirds, but momentum began to shift back and forth as the clouds burned off and the temperature rose into the high 80s.

An impressive individual effort by Cole DeNormandie (Lincoln, Mass.) nearly put the Revs on the score sheet in the 42nd minute. DeNormandie collected the ball from a throw-in and executed a clever turn in traffic, before passing it out wide. After receiving the ball back in the middle, the young Rev fired a low shot that went just wide of the far post.

Shattuck-Saint Mary’s scored only minutes into the second half, but Fabio Machado, Jr. (Leominster, Mass.) – assisted by DeNormandie – equalized for New England in the 52nd. Two more goals from Shattuck-Saint Mary’s in the 56th and 62nd minutes then put the Revs in a hole.

In the 72nd minute, Machado slipped the ball to DeNormandie, who calmly slotted it past the Saint Mary’s goalkeeper in a one-on-one situation. Despite several more opportunities, the Revs were unable to level the score again and suffered their first loss of the Showcase.

The Under-16s play their second game of the Playoffs on Sunday, June 26, against Texas Rush AJ Auxerre at 9 p.m. ET. The Under-18s will next meet the Richmond Strikers on Monday, June 27, at 10 a.m. ET.
