FRISCO, Texas – The New England Revolution Under-18 team played its second group game of the 2012-13 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs on Tuesday night, earning a 1-1 draw against fellow MLS club the San Jose Earthquakes (Calif.).
San Jose came out of the gates flying, controlling much of the match early on. The momentum began to balance out by the 21st minute, however, when Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) made a darting run into the box, the Earthquakes’ goalkeeper eventually taking the ball off his feet. By the 31st minute, play was back and forth with each team creating chances before the other countered. After a pair of opportunities, the Revs finally capitalized in the 42nd minute. Will Szostkiewicz (Longmeadow, Mass.) got a head on Will Rasid’s (Wilbraham, Mass.) long throw-in, burying the ball to give New England the advantage. Danny Apajee (Cranston, R.I.) nearly doubled the Revs’ lead in the 45th minute, making a run the length of the field before having his low shot saved.
On the other side of the break, San Jose’s Tren Biswell scored an equalizing header in the 61st minute to make it 1-1. Tempers began to flare as both teams pressed for the game-winner and five cautions were doled out. During five full minutes of added time, both teams played with a sense of desperation, but the score held through to the final whistle.
With the draw, New England is currently in third place in its group. The Dallas Texans topped the LA Galaxy, 2-0, on Tuesday night, securing the local side the top spot in the group (4 pts.). LA currently sits in second place (3 pts.), followed by New England (2 pts.) and San Jose (1 pt.).
On Wednesday, the Under-16s will take on Real Colorado (Colo.) in their second game of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Showcase. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET. With a rest day tomorrow, the Under-18s will play their third and final game of the Playoffs against the LA Galaxy (Calif.) on Thursday at 10 a.m. ET.
