FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution youth teams were back on the road last weekend, traveling to Boyds, Md., to face Potomac on Saturday, April 28, before meeting Baltimore Bays Chelsea in Owings Mill, Md., on Sunday, April 29.
Combined, the Revs' youth teams went 1-1-2, with the U16s earning the club’s first-ever victory against Baltimore Bay Chelsea.
UNDER-18s
On Saturday, the Under-18s played Potomac to a 2-2 draw in a physical game beset by three ejections and four cautions. Potomac scored first in the 24th minute, affording the home side an advantage that would last until the second half. Ramiro Osorio (Hooksett, N.H.) was then brought down in the box in the 62nd minute, earning him a penalty kick that he slotted into the bottom left corner to equalize. Dominik Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) scored the go-ahead for New England off a free kick just two minutes later. In a frenetic finish, Potmac’s goalkeeper Philip Breno leveled the score two minutes into added time, coming forward in the final minutes, to make the final score 2-2.
The U18s then suffered a 6-1 loss to Baltimore Bays Chelsea on Sunday. Malcolm Harris opened Baltimore’s account in the first minute of play and doubled the team’s advantage just 10 minutes later. A goal from Yaw Amankwa increased Baltimore’s lead to 3-0 before halftime, and the home side scored twice more on the other side of the break before New England scored a goal of its own. Peguy Ngatcha (Manchester, N.H.) found the back of the net in the 76th minute, assisted by Rainer Randell (Cranston, R.I.), to make it 5-1. Baltimore’s Christian Morales buried one more in the 90th minute – his second goal of the match – to close the game out.
UNDER-16s
On Saturday, the Under-16s played Potomac to a scoreless draw. Having arrived in Maryland only a few hours earlier, the Revs trotted their starting XI out in a steady rain. The weather held for the entirety of the match, making conditions difficult for both teams. Zach Herivaux (Brookline, Mass.) created New England’s best chance of the game, sliding in to meet Steven Duncan’s (Barrington, R.I.) cross, but sending the ball just high. Also of note, Revolution goalkeeper Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) made a pair of saves to preserve the shutout.
The U16s earned a 1-0 victory against Baltimore Bays Chelsea on Sunday. After a quiet first half, New England scored what would prove to the game-winner in the 56th minute. Defender Rev Matt Cooper (Londonderry, N.H.) scored for the first time this season, heading home Declan McCabe’s (Weston, Mass.) cross from the right. Aviza made six saves, earning his second shutout in as many games.
With the draw and loss, the Under-18s are now 6-6-2 and sit in third place in the Northeast Division of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s East Conference. With the draw and win, the Under-16s are now 8-5-1 record and are in second place in the Division.
The youth teams are back at Gillette Stadium this weekend when they begin division play, playing Empire United on Saturday, May 5, before hosting Seacoast United on Sunday, May 6.
